Your Thursday Moment of Words Fail Me

Unsightly box troll master of the obvious rock "critic" Bob Lefsetz went to a One Direction show at the Rose Bowl a couple of days ago and posted this report.

It was incomprehensible.

Furthermore, if you weren’t there you probably didn’t know it happened, despite the act selling out two dates and nearly a third, on a Thursday, a school night.

And that was who were there. Students. Girls. Wanna get laid? Go to a 1D show. You won’t see odds this good at the prison of “Orange Is The New Black.” An endless sea of barely pubescent girls, screaming their heads off. You’d think it was the new Beatles.

Only it wasn’t.

I would like to remind you all, at this juncture and for the record, that the guy who wrote the above is in his early 60s and looks like this.

Jeebus, what an asshole.

You can read the rest of it here if you have the stomach.

Aside from his age and physiognomy it has always been strange to me in general to make the equation that if you are a desperate guy and you go somewhere because young women are attracted by goodlooking men onstage it is somehow you who will score. just sayin...

Yeah, that Little Black Dress thing is OK. At least better than either Paul McCartney or Rick Springfield fronting the Foo Fighters ;-)

I'm going to take this opportunity to hijack this thread a bit, given that 1) I've never (knowingly) heard anything by One Direction; and 2) the Lefsetz comment is so barefaced awful that Steve and others are doing a fine job of commenting.

I just wanted to mention that I'm really enjoying the most recent Sweet/Hoffs collaboration "Under the Covers, Vol. 3". OK, it's not a masterpiece or classic, and the playing could loosen up a bit; but the song selection is perfectly wonderful, and Susannah Hoffs is a goddess. Many highlights, but I'll mention her lead on "Girls Talk" and "Trouble" as particular favorites...

I think I need to hear that album, John. Thanks for the heads up.

Speaking of Jabba the Hutt, I've seen Fat Matt a bunch of times starting in the early nineties when he was just a wee chubster. Don't get me wrong, I looove Girlfriend and don't dislike the rest of his studio stuff. But every time I see him live I wonder why I went.

He's very remote and indifferent when he performs. He's high as hell. Whether he is, or not, he looks strung out. He's not very pleasing to the eyes and looks like he has hygiene problems. When Ivan Julian was in the band at least there was something to get excited about.

Most of the time I saw him was in small 500 seat or less venues and the band was turned up way too fuckin' loud. I like loud and clear. I don't care if my innerds are vibrating as long as it's clean and clear. But I hate mud.

I tape shows and I'm keenly aware of the all too frequent shitty sound. Every show I've seen him do as a solo act was sludge. So ridiculously loud that you can no longer make out the individual intruments. Even so, Matthew was constantly turning his Orange amps louder.

His shows with Susanna are far more enjoyable, congenial and sonically superior.

Is Lefsetz a special needs individual, by any chance?

It would explain a lot (including his appearance and lack of skills). That way, we could all feel pity for him rather than revulsion.

I just couldn't work up any outrage for this. I've been reading annoying reviews since 1969. It's just another one.

I stumbled on Lefsetz once when he wrote a column about Graham Parker's "Heat Treatment" album, stating it was Parker's best because it was produced by Mutt Lange. That's it. That's the whole justification for the opinion. He even admitted he couldn't remember a single song from the album, but it just had that Mutt Lange sound. Most recently I saw him opining about how U2 had jumped the shark because Apple gave away their new album. Like or hate U2 or Apple, this is not, despite the Twitter eruption, the end of civilization. Just don't download it, for god's sake.

The sorry state of the music industry is certainly not lost in this Lefsetz guy seems to be making a twilight career of some import whereby millions read him, music execs (are there any left) court him, and some big name musicians respond to his musings. He may be somewhat knowledgeable, but the emphasis is on "somewhat" being trotted out as relevant. I read him just for the irritation and self-important delusion. One sentence from Simels trumps everything this man has ever written, lol!

My all-time fave show was Matthew Sweet at Irving Plaza, NYC, March 25th, 2000. A perfect balance of new material, fan faves and the hits; the band was flawless and the sound was top-notch. But it's the only time I've ever seen him live, in person, so...

Lefsetz is a colossal d-bag. Ugh.
