Death, the Army, jail, the Church had all taken their heroes away and they did everything they could to build life-long careers, not realizing that long careers carry their own traps. Fifty years making great three-minute records turns you into a self-parody by definition, because you can't not return to the lyric concerns and musical textures that inform your work.
