Return From Planet Claire

I haven't really made up my mind yet, but it occurs to me that the B-52s may well have passed their shelf date.

Seriously -- it's a cute enough song (and apparently the whole new album is in the same ballpark, quality wise) but I think Fred Schneider comes off a little creepy here. I'll leave it to others to comment on the ladies, however.

I confess to having no critical objectivity toward the band. In 1978, on the jukebox of the Shack, a frat bar in Chapel Hill, Rock Lobster was this oasis of weird and new in a sea of tired "Beach Music."

It was up there with the first Elvis Costello record, where he starts out by singing "Now that your picture's in the paper being rhythmically admired . . ."

Those moments were transcendent and trasnforming, and I owe the artists so much. I would probably pay money to sit and watch those guys cough. Well, almost, cause I owe them.

True story:

The first gig these guys played in NYC -- at Max's Kansas City -- they were short a guitar amp, and they borrowed mine (an old pre-CBS Fender Bassman).

A guy I knew who worked at Bleecker Bob's in the Village was friends with them and he shlepped the amp around.

Can't remember if I went to the show or not, although I definitely saw them in a club at some point.

I find them hard to dislike.

Schtick's a bit worn, I'll agree.

I don't find Fred as creepy as, say, David Letterman, but yeah, I see your point. He cut a solo album not too long ago, didn't he?

Cool! I had a pre-cbs bassman! What in the world did I sell it for, probably some solid state crap.

This does not change my mind that the best B-52's music is pre-Love Shack.

"Cute enough song" is a good description.
