Memories of Underdevelopment

You know, back in the day, I was absolutely convinced that Debbie Gibson's "Shake Your Love" was the butt-ugliest record ever made, and probably the worst song ever written.

It depresses and frankly frightens me that in the two decades or so since I have heard all sorts of stuff that's even worse.

Although that chorus remains just appallingly stupid.

I always thought the lyrics were

"Shake your love and then put down the seat."

Lame as the song is, in all fairness, she was how old when she wrote this? Sixteen? Seventeen?

That's kind of the point. At the time I thought it was hideous beyond words. Listening to it now, I thought -- it's a serviceable Madonna knockoff written by somebody who was a pro beyond her years.

As if Madonna isn't derivative enough.
