Monday's Moment of "You Gotta Be Sh***ing Me"

Well, it turns out that Buffalo Springfield isn't the only legendary band currently doing a reunion tour despite the fact that two of their founding members are dead. In fact, it turns out that there are two more legendary bands re-treading the boards (although they're actually performing under the same name. Sort of.)

In any case, despite the aforementioned dead founding members still being dead, please enjoy -- from just a week or two ago in Japan -- the legendary Small Faces/Faces and a thoroughly astounding live performance of the former's ever-riveting 60s classic "Tin Soldier."

And you'll never fricking guess who's replicating the late Steve Marriott's lead vocals. Not to mention who's playing the late Ronnie Lane's bass lines.

Who is filling out one half of the Small Faces? Hopefully it's not 2 guys from a Small Faces cover band. Like Journey and Foreigner, and those original guys aren't even dead.

Well, teh Googles say that Mick Hucknall (of Simply Red) was singing for the Small Faces reunions in 2010. I have no info about the bass player...

Not being a child of the '60s (I grew up in the '70s in the mid-south-west, so my adolescent radio consisted of heavy doses of Molly Hatchet, REO Speedwagon, and the Eagles; I leave it to the imagination how I turned out), I confess I had never heard "Tin Soldier" until a couple of months ago when I was listening to the truly excellent Underground Garage program on Sirius/XM. I continue to say that if you love power pop and can afford the $12/month, Sirius/XM is worth the money just for Underground Garage...

The aforementioned not dead bass player is....wait for it...Glenn Matlock of the Sex Pistols.

The ironies abound, obviously....

There's more where that came from. Maybe later or later this week.

*Sounds* almost like Roger Daltry on lead vocals (at parts). But I'm sure it's not.

Ah -- Glen Matlock. Outstanding.

As those who've read I Was A Teenage Sex Pistol [Matlock's occasionally-supplemented late-80s/90s/2000s autobiography] have learned, Matlock was a huge Small Faces/Faces fan. It's nice to see him filling in the kid's role (and in his early 50s, at that!).

I wish I could see the ironies, but I haven't picked them up yet.

I'll be seeing Glen Matlock, with his Philistines, a couple of times [Brooklyn and Baltimore] on their short East Coast tour in September. I'll be the geek getting autographs on all of the Philistines discs, as well as the excellent 1990s solo record by Matlock.

Yup; fan here!

Interesting comments on the current tour from Ian McLagan, the Faces' immensely talented keyboard player:

Having heard some recent Stewart vocals, I agree with his assessment.

Also been looking at some videos of the "reunited Faces" shows...

Ron Wood can for sure still play, which makes me thinks that the Stones have simply been turning him down, as opposed to the years/substances taking their toll on his playing:

Such a shame that Ronnie's unique guitar sound has been muted.

Is it me, or should there be 40 more comments drooling over this? What the hell?

The thought of The faces without Rod or Ronnie leaves me a little cold, but I have to admit, that clip on the website sounds really good. Mick more than holds his own.
