An Early Clue to the New Direction: Special They're Called Boobs, Ed Edition)

From 1974, please enjoy the aerodynamically unlikely Dolly Parton and a terrific live performance of her classic tale of a hill country Jezebel, the often-covered "Jolene."

I should add that my girlfriend at the time actually bought one of Dolly's stage outfits -- pretty much identical to the one in the clip -- at a charity auction back in the day, and being a petite little thing, it fit her almost perfectly. Except where you might imagine.

In any case, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded to the first reader who gleans the clip's relevance to the theme of tomorrow's Weekend Listomania.

But I'm not holding my breath on this one...

  2. BTW, Steverino, do you remember a Chet Flippo piece in CREEM that cane out a year or two before this video about him and a bunch of his hippie-freak friends going to see Dolly at the Cow Palace in SF? They went backstage after, and she was surprised to see a bunch of longhair freaks gushing with praise, but Porter Waggoner was esp. mystified...

  4. I used to watch Porter Waggoner's show when I was living in Iowa in 1972 ... Dolly hawked Duz detergent; it came with a little towel right in the box!

I'll never forget: "Lookee here, Porter!" :-)

Anyway, I have no idea what this week's list is ...

  7. Cheatin' (and going to Argentina) songs?

Nearly apropos of nothing, there's an outstanding compilation of Porter Wagoner songs that came out a couple of years ago.

  9. When we saw the White Stripes at the Garden 2 summers ago, the warm-up group was ... Porter Wagoner!

He only played 20-25 minutes, but it was great to see him.

Less than 6 months later, he was gone.

(The second warm-up on the bill was Nick Cave's Grinderman, which drove most of the audience out of the arena until they were done.)

  13. Our esteemed host is otherwise engaged for the evening, and he asked me to swing by to see how things were going.

First, no, no, no, no, etc.

His suggested hint: it's about the singer, not the song ...
