In the Immortal Words of Edith Prickley...
...could be a hot one!!!
More specifically, I'm seeing John Fogerty tonight at the Beacon.
Amazingly enough, never seen him in concert. Or Creedence neither.
CCR OVERrated??? Hardly. Their music has held up better than most of what was on the charts and the airwaves back then. They had a really high "killer to filler" ratio (until Mardi Gras, of course), and there are very few CCR songs that I don't still enjoy.
Fogarty was definitely a dick to his bandmates, though, including his brother. I don't know if he's mellowed in his old age, or not.
The songs are great, and he's a pro. Maybe too pro. A little slicker than I would have expected for a guy in a flannel shirt. :-)
But for anyone who plans on going to the Beacon Theater in NY, here's one single word of advice: DON'T. The acoustics are so bad that I will NEVER go there again.
I saw JCF last month. He was great. For a man of his age, he has retained his vocal chops very well. In my min, few can match his out in 1969-1970 where he pumped out 5 classic albums with CCR.
I don't find him overrated at all. There are few who have a defined sound, meaning you hear it and know it Fogerty.
I often wonder why he could not throw his brother a bone. Tom sounded enough like John that he easily could have sang a few songs and still retained the CCR sound. It may have saved the band.
This track is the only post-1970 track to include all four CCR members:
I'm sure he'll be great, but I still think he's a dick.
ReplyDeleteCCR - the most overrated act ever? Quite possibly, with the Doors coming a close second. Hmm.
ReplyDeletejust like JB and your boy, Bruce, one of the hardest working men in showbiz.
ReplyDeleteFogerty is a great pop songwriter.
ReplyDeleteAnd no group is more overrated than the Doors, IMO.
Cosmo and Stu be there?
ReplyDeleteTom has a better chance of being there....
Although he will be a bit less hirsute. :-)
ReplyDeleteBased on the one song he did as part of Bruce's fundraising concerts for John Kerry, he has a lot of fun on stage, and it's infectious.
