Meanwhile, FYI -- for reasons I won't bore you with, I have to type this (and the next few weeks' posts) with one finger on an IPad Mini, so I can't really insert graphics or music links. Thanks in advance for your patience until this is, er, resolved.
That said, it's time to move on to the business at hand, to wit --
And Your Favorite Cover of a Chuck Berry Song (That ISN'T by the Beatles or the Stones) is...?
Discuss.
I should add that a Coveted PowerPop No-Prize™ will be awarded to the first reader who picks the one I'm thinking of.
Have a great weekend, everybody!
Promised Land by Elvis Presley.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back!
Bob Seger's "Let It Rock" on "Smokin' O.P.s" kicks ass.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Back, Bub!
Peter Tosh's Johnny B. Goode is all a cover should be - not so far from the original that you don't recognize it, but different enough that you want to hear it repeatedly.

For the more faithful approach, Dave Edmunds does Chuck Berry better than most. Try The Promised Land from the Rockpile album.

Phil —DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER
ReplyDeleteAssuming you’re talking about the live version, backed by Brinsley Schwarz, on Subtle as aFlying Mallet. If so, enjoy your coveted No-Prize™.
Hey— let’s add a runner up. My 2nd fave CB cover not by the Beatles or Stones.
That’s the one!
DeleteI am humbled beyond belief, but I would happily trade in for another 20 years plus of great health for you Steve.
Phil
Back in the USA. Edgar Winter's White Trash 'Roadwork'. Derringer and band are off the charts.
ReplyDeleteAnd, Welcome back!
Does “Surfin’ USA” count?
ReplyDeleteThe Dead off “Skull & Roses” - “Johnny B. Goode” ... and then there’s the version in “Back to the Future” ...
“Hey, Chuck! It’s Marvin! You know, your cousin, Marvin Berry? You know that new sound you’re lookin’ for? Well, listen to this!”
ReplyDeleteQED.
Johnny Rivers: Memphis, Tennessee
ReplyDeleteStaus Quo: Bye Bye, Johnny
The Yobs: Run Rudolph Run
and, yes, I second 'Back in the USA' by both the Modern Lovers and MC5.
"You Can't Catch Me" - Love Sculpture
ReplyDelete"The Promised Land" and ""Back to Memphis" by the Band.
ReplyDeleteOkay, my second choice was the Kinks “Too Much Monkey Business.”
ReplyDeleteJimi Hendrix's version of Johnny B. Goode is my favorite, followed closely by Buddy Holly's Brown-Eyed Handsome Man (incongruous as it is for that song to be sung by a white guy).
ReplyDeleteMarc
The Youngbloods used to do Too Much Monkey Business, as did Tom Rush. And the Blues Project did You Can't Catch Me.
ReplyDeleteyes brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThe Sonics - Roll Over Beethoven
ReplyDeleteThe Byrds - Roll Over Beethoven
NRBQ - It Don't Take But A Few Minutes
Flamin' Groovies - Don't Lie To Me
Welcome back, Steve...
all good ones. I've always enjoyed Ian Gomm's version of "Come on".
ReplyDeletekeep that one good finger healthy :)
My favorite Chuck Berry cover is the other CB cover on "Subtle as a Flying Mallet", No Money Down!
ReplyDeletePlayed it many times on my radio show.
Captain Al
Very glad you are back Steve and hope you get back to full health! BTW, were you/are you publishing a book?
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are back and hopefully healthy for a long time to come. I'm late to the party here but my favorite Chuck cover is It Wasn't Me by George Thorogood, who is not cool in some circles (I've always liked him) but here takes one of Chuck's more obscure tunes, preserves the humor and rocks the hell out of it IMO. Of course YMMV.
ReplyDeleteJeezus, all these Dave Edmunds nods and no one mentions his take on 'Run Rudolph Run'? Nor Johnny Rivers' 'Memphis'? I'll second ELO's 'Roll Over Beethoven' and Thorogood's 'It Wasn't Me'.

Have loved the Edgar Winter White Trash version of Back In The USA since I was too young to drive! Also think Emmylou Harris' version of You Never Can Tell from Elite Hotel is that rare cover taking where it takes an already great song to a wholly different place. I'm shocked that Steve says he wasn't familiar with this one. I can thank WJLN progressive FM radio in Birmingham, Alabama for helping me discover native Birminghamian Emmylou among many others back in my early youth. That station helped set a path and primed me for discovering Steve's great writing in Stereo Review.
