As I said, I don't know what the occasion of that was -- the footage apparently derives from MTV -- but it's an absolutely delightful performance.
The musicians, however, seem identifiable. The white-haired bass player would seem to be Will Lee (then of the David Letterman Show band); the drummer is likely Steve Ferrone (then of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers) and the guitar player -- having the seeming time of his life imitating the original Harrison solos -- is obviously the great Mike Campbell (whose guaranteed to be fascinating autobiography, I should add, will be available over at Amazon next week).
In any event, just fabulous.
Coming tomorrow: Actual new music by a band that isn't world famous!!!

ReplyDeleteI was very, very surprised to read a few years back that the solo in Taxman was played by Paul. Maybe the internet was incorrect, as is often the case.
This was the practice session for George's '92 Albert Hall concert. There is a amateur video of the concert on youtube that's pretty good for an early 90's bootleg

DeleteUm, no. Methinks Steve had it right in the first place. Having watched the Letterman show as long as anyone, I'd say that's Will Lee just by his body language. Besides, Petty was a shorter dude and his bass of choice was a Rick.
ReplyDeleteAfter checking The Google It would appear I stand corrected. I have seen pictures of Petty playing a couple of different Horner’s, a P-Bass and a hollow body Gibson as well as the aforementioned Rickenbacker. I just loved the idea that it could have been Tom.
