Here's the trailer, which gives you a pretty good idea of the feel of the thing...
...and here's a song from the soundtrack album, featuring Paul McCartney. I particularly enjoyed his reaction to the ersatz "Penny Lane" trumpet part. 😎
So how did I like it? The short version...it's wonderful. And as for Valerie Franco, the heavily tattoed blonde punkette cutie who plays Didi Crockett, their new drummer (and she's really playing the drums)...
Let's just say that a star is born. 😎 😎
Seriously, if you enjoyed the original film you're gonna be delighted with this one. Trust me.
And I'd tell you more, but there's no way I can really do that without verging on spoiler territory.
I, too, saw it last night. It was pleasant enough to recommend. Not the cult classic the original was, but a nice coda. And anything that puts Elton John in the hospital is all right with me. (this is not an endorsement of hurting Elton John)
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the film is seriously bombing at the box office. GF and I were the only two people in the theatre. I have access to the grosses in my town, and the theatres are grossing in the low to mid-double digits on five shows a day. Nationally, it only grossed about $1.5million for the weekend (compared to the other old folks movie Downton Abbey, which did a unimpressive $18million)
I suspect the target audience (we old people) will be watching this on TV.
Oh yeah. The screening we caught -- at our favorite arthouse multiplex in Kew Gardens -- it was just the Shady Dame and me, plus two other old couples, with canes(!).
DeleteWe really liked the original but seem to remember that it caught on with the HBO / cable showings. Hard to beat "Best in Show."
ReplyDeleteIf you liked the original, you'll definitely dig this -- not to give anything away, but it answers a lot of questions, if you take my meaning. 😎

That Valerie Franco -- who plays the new drummer -- I was telling you about. I am seriously in love. 😎

I had so much fun at this. Went with the group of friends I saw it with in 1984, now with wives, children etc., so it was a bit of a reunion. The McCartney section was my favorite, especially St. Hubbies reaction, but enjoyed the whole thing. It's less than 90 minutes, which is how a comedy should be
