A(n Internet) Star is Born

Murphy Campbell, ladies and germs. Words fail me.

She's 19 going on 20, and she's from North Carolina.

She doesn't seem to have a website yet, and I don't know any more biographical stuff about her, but as you can see, she's the real deal musically and she's got charisma up the wazoo.

There's some issues going on with her -- involving an AI simulation and copyright infringements -- which I'll try to get the lowdown on for you guys and post about down the road; meanwhile, you can listen to/purchase some more of her music over at Bandcamp HERE.

  1. 1/I looked into it a bit and read that the confusion likely comes from recent (early 2026) news where AI-generated clones of her voice and performances were created by scraping her YouTube videos. These fakes were uploaded to Spotify/Apple Music/etc. under her name by a distributor, leading to copyright trolls claiming her own original public-domain performances on YouTube. It's a real Black Mirror-style case highlighting AI music scams, but Murphy herself is not simulated—she's the victim of it. Her actual videos show a real human playing and singing in natural settings.

You can check her YouTube channel directly for the authentic "The Cuckoo" video and others like "Pretty Saro," "Darlin' Corey," or "Swannanoa Town." She's part of a broader revival of traditional mountain/old-time music in the region.

  3. I know very well the part of NC from where she comes. I lived in that same Blue Ridge region for @ 6 years - my area was called "The Dark Corner". Bluegrass is their cultural touchstone. I rode my motorcycle through those mountain roads - for this New England born son, it was an awakening. My first B/G album -
    "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"

    1. 1/part of my own journey through this world below - as a wayfaring acquaintance - had some aspects in parallel with yours - I was New England born [Framingham, MA - in the latter part of the first half of the twentieth century - the past is a different country, someone has said] , Army brat childhood, Boston area undergrad, Buffalo NY extended grad school and futzing around years, then four and a half years teaching at what was then called Clinch Valley College - a joke I was told soon after I got there - "the difference between a Yankee and a damn Yankee - a Yankee comes down, looks around, and goes home, and a damn Yankee don't go home soon enough" - as I said, I left after four and half years, and went north - to Baltimore, not really a northern place, and not really home, but a good enough next step as I wander through this world below - as the saying goes, "compared to what?"

      Quote Investigator says:

from “The New York Times” in March 1929. The phrase “nice girl’ was used instead of “pretty girl”:

Numerous anecdotes are being circulated concerning Einstein. He once told a girl secretary when she was bothered by inquisitive interviewers, who wanted to know what relativity really meant, to answer:

“When you sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it’s only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it’s two hours. That’s relativity.”

2/I almost went to a bluegrass concert a few weeks ago - Peter Rowan with the Sam Grisman Project - I went to several of his shows when he and I lived in the Boston area, long ago - I ended up missing the Birchmere show for personal reasons - as a substitute I read a book about Rowan - Mike Fiorito's "Mescalito Riding his White Horse" - the title is rearranged from a line in the song "Panama Red" - I liked the book
