Weekend Listomania

Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental houseboy Kato and I will be donning chaps and lederhosen and heading out for a night on the mean (Christopher) streets of New York's Greenwich Village (say no more, nudge nudge, wink wink.)

With any luck, then, posting (by moi) will necessarily be sporadic for a while, but while I'm gone here's a fun project.

Best Use of Electric Twelve-String Guitar on a Record NOT by the Beatles, Byrds or Roger McGuinn!!!

My totally top of my head Top Five:

1. "Dance Dance Dance" -- The Beach Boys

2. "Not Where It's At" -- Del Amitri

3. "Beginning to See the Light" -- Velvet Underground

4. "Senses Working Overtime" -- XTC

5. "Exception That Proves the Rule " --Gerry Devine and the Hi-Beams (a great but obscure band from the 90s featuring me on bass and keyboards. No kidding!)

Join in, won't you?

3 comments:

  1. 1. "The Last Thing on My Mind" -- The Move

    2. "What's the Use" -- Pretty Things

    3. "White Summer" -- The Yardbirds

    4. "A Better Place" -- The Hollies (Mr. Tony Hicks is amazingly underappreciated as a guitarist)

    5. "The Ballad of El Goodo" - Big Star

    6. "Back of a Car" - Big Star. Possibly the finest power pop tune of all time.

  2. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

You Bowed Down - Elvis Costello (possible reason for disqualification: McGuinn recorded this Elvis song first)

The Waiting/Listen To Her Heart - Tom Petty (possible reason for disqualification: for a couple of years, Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty were the same person)

I Must Be In Love - The Rutles (possible reason for disqualification: in several parallel universes, the Rutles and the Beatles had reversed places)

The Kids Are Alright - The Who (possible reason for disqualification: other than playing chords for a really great song, there's not much 12-string action going on)

  3. Distant Sun - Crowded House: Not a Rick (a Dano, I believe), but that only makes it more unique

That's Not Me - The Beach Boys: Captures the pathos of the character in the quiet parts perfectly

The Ties That Bind - Bruce Springsteen: I think there are two of them in the opening

Could've Been Anyone - Aimee Mann: Damn, that opening arpeggio announces that song beautifully
