Weekend Listomania (Special Video Edition)

Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental houseboy Kato and I are off to California for a tour of the upper crust Palm Springs locations used in the steamy yet highly realistic hit summer teen melodrama miniseries Hidden Palms (Wednesday nights on the CW!!!!).

A gay old time is guaranteed for all, if you know what I mean. But as a result, posting by moi will necessarily be a bit sporadic for a day or two.

In the meantime, here's another little project for you fine folks:

Best Ever (Non-Prog) Rock Instrumental!
[arbitrary rule: Joe Satriani, who I otherwise have no problem with, is prog, so don't nominate him]

My reasonably well-considered Top Ten:

1. Rumble -- Link Wray

2. The Man From HUAC -- Laika and the Cosmonauts

3. Beck's Bolero -- Jeff Beck

4. Apricot Brandy -- Rhinosceros

5. The Carlsberg Special -- Wizzard

6. Perfidia -- The Ventures

7. Sabre Dance -- Love Sculpture with Dave Edmunds

8. Theme from Star Wars -- Big Daddy (guitar instrumental a la the Ventures)

9. Like Long Hair -- Paul Revere and the Raiders

10. Cobwebs and Strange -- The Who

Join in, won't you?

  3. Respectfully, Satch isn't prog, he's just a guy who doesn't know when to not play too many notes.

And Dave? It's "Sleepwalk" by S&J, and "Pipeline" was done by the Chantays. I have the single.

On a mem-based blog post many moons ago, I pointed out that Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" might be the greatest instrumental of all time.

    Or "Miserlou" by Dick Dale.

Or "Apache" by either The Shadows, or Jörgen Ingman.

And Molly, while "Perfidia" is indeed nice, it's still all about "Walk Don't Run".

  4. Oops, sorry Steve, I just assumed it was Molly's post.

  14. shrimplate,

I left "Wipeout" off my list as being too obvious.

True Story: My buddy had the single, and I remember that on one long, hot summer day when we had nothing else to do we played it over and over, at least 20 or 30 times.

Suddenly, my buddy's Dad burst into the room looking like something out of a Marvel comic book and he ripped the disc off the record player and smashed it in front of us. It was at that very moment that I realized I was on to something with this rock n' roll stuff!!

    Cheers!

Yep. Booker T is their own category.
    IMHO

  20. OK, this is really blogwhoring, but since you brought up Peter Gunn, here's my post on the Music Meme that I mentioned above.

Several of us were passing this around 5/05, and I discuss instrumentals, and especially the recording of Peter Gunn by my friend Al Schmitt.

  21. I am deeply ashamed I didn't nominate something by the Raybeats, who were clearly the greatest instro band of all time.

    Sorry.

  23. 'Mr. Scary' - Dokken

'Hall of the Mountain King' intro - Savatage

"Third Man Theme" - The Band

  26. No one's mentioned "Nutrocker"?

Question: what's the connection between that and "Theme From Peter Gunn"?

    Buellar???

    You sicken me.

Re: Nutrocker Didn't Kim Fowley have something to do with B. BUMBLE AND THE STINGERS? Jeez. He had his hand in everything.

  28. I withdraw "Deeper Into Movies" from my comment above. I forgot it has a vocal track.

    "Flying" - the Beatles

See, I was gonna vote for that except they sing at the very end. La la la la ladeda....

    So it's not an instrumental(:-)

  30. "Apache" by the Incredible Bongo Band

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm going to have to nominate "The Bell and the Butterfly" by The Charlatans, unless of course there's some rule that it has to be a (North) American band and/or that anything recorded in the 1990s or later is too recent. Nobody has mentioned "Telstar" by The Tornadoes, either...
