Apocalypse Now

My 70s band's 1975 indie single is going for 25 bucks on ebay.

I'm stunned, seriously. What do you think -- should I contact the seller and tell 'em they've gotta be kidding?

  1. The Hounds? Seriously?

No wonder you had to drive to Pittsburgh to get laid.

  2. There was a band on Columbia called The Hounds around '78-'79 - same group?

  3. No...different guys, but believe me I hated them for obvious reasons.

Of course, we had broken up by then so it didn't really matter.

  4. Dear mbowen: No, the Columbia Hound's were a different group from the midwest (I believe Chicago). Marsha Swanberg of Simel's Hounds met a Columbia executive at a party who was playing the single on his stereo (remember them?) and he said the midwest Hounds claimed the single was their's & and Columbia partially signed them due to the Call Me single.

Steve, we all should get a cut of the ebay sale! I should get my usual 10% of nothing.

I think this calls for a reunion and a world tour!

I will send a copy of the single (if I still have any) to the first person who can guess what the record label's name "POJ" stands for. This offer includes members of the band guessing. A hint: Think what it was like to play gigs on the Bowery circuit in 1974 - 77.

By the way, the single is really good!

PS: The Romantics still owe me $5.00 for their share of the Copperfields gig.

  5. ROTP:

I totally didn't remember that story about Marcia.

I find it a little difficult to believe, but holy crap anyway...

  6. As far as I remember it's a true story.

One more story about the single: The A side: "Call Me" was recorded at Electric Ladyland studios and the B Side " On the Road" at Bergen Community College. That pretty much tells the absurd story of the Hounds right there. I still have the reel of the 4 track of the B side hanging on my basement storage room doornob (I'm staring at it as I write this).

  7. I just went to the Ebay website. You can make an offer for the single. Leet's offer to take the single off of the dealers hands if he pays us $25.00.

You can see how much fun I'm having with this whole (hole) thing.

  9. Both great answers (better then the real name) but no.
    Keep guessing.

  10. Geez, you guys should get in touch with the seller and offer to sign it for a hefty fee! If the single alone is worth $25, the single signed by 2 members of the band ought to be worth $100, easy.

Seriously, though, that's so cool. I'd love to hear it sometime.

p.s., you can spend even more on the single, here

  12. I have two copies of that single --can I haz double the money? Also, these Hounds were named for "The hounds of spring" line in Swinburne's "Atalanta in Calydon." hey, it was college.

  13. Dear Anonymous:

No you can't have double the money, you have to pay Simels & I double to take them off of your hands.

By the way who the heck are you to have two copies of the single? A Weasel? Now that's a Crime against Nature!

gummo: I was the band's manager and believe me no one could manage the Hounds! They were quietly nuts and major league neurotics!

The guesses have been fabulous but wrong. I'll reveal the answer tomorrow. You'll hate me.

covettednoprize: I'm offended by your guess of Pissing on Jesus and I'm a Jew! Are you sure you aren't really Johnny Rotten?

  17. ROT, thanks for revealing the answer. You would have liked my next guess no better:
    Pure Orange Juice

  18. Actually covetednoprize, as sick as some of your guesses were they were far better then what the real name stood for.

The East Village really was a jungle and garbage dump in those days so it was easy to come up with our secret sarcastic name for the record label.
