An Early (And Hideously Dressed) Clue to the New Direction

From 1974, here's Swedish glam fashion victims ABBA and their insidiously catchy ode to love as a battlefield, the ubiquitous "Waterloo."

As always, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded the first reader who gleans its relevance to tomorrow's Weekend Listomania.

Not holding my breath, though. You bastids.

  1. Wow. They look right out of a WWF wrestling event. Is Vince McMahon paying the royalties for fashion?

I love the point at 2.12 where Anni is looking in totally the wrong direction.

I guess it "love as a battlefield" metaphor is far too obvious for the list? Although Pat Benetar comes to mind instantly. How about:
Hit songs sung in English from non-native English speakers
Songs referencing geographic location for metaphoric reasons

  18. Reminds me of a few episodes of "What Not to Wear". Though I have no disrepect for the song - still an out-of-the-blue pop masterpiece.

Pop songs with a prominent role for the piano?

Okay, you nailed it. Actually, it's songs about either war or peace, but obviously the coveted PowerPop no-Prize is heading your way via ferret caravan as we speak.

Congratulations, Anon, whoever you are. As if I didn't know.
