Hey Hey We're the Monks
As promised, from 1995, here are the guys from Big Daddy, doing business as The Benzedrine Monks of Santo Domonica, going all Gregorian on Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart's immortal Theme From the Monkees.
Obviously, they were too busy singing to put anybody down.
To me, it's a one-joke premise that doesn't sustain the track's length -- let alone an entire album.
However, I did like the very monk-y pauses on some of the phrases (e.g., "a... round" at the 34-second mark), and I smiled when they intoned "We're too busy chanting to put anybody down."
Nevertheless, I'm grateful for you exposing me to stuff I've never heard before.
Thanks, Steve!
PS: For anyone who likes mixing classical music with comedy, you can't go past PDQ Bach. He's the first (and last) word on butchering the classics.
Note to self:
ReplyDeleteStupid novelty records based on mid90s New Age faves not as popular with readers as expected.
:-)
You should have told a Ross Perot joke too!
ReplyDeleteGets old fast, by the 40 second mark. Sorry Steve, not up to your high standards.

Everybody's a fricking critic.
ReplyDelete:-)
Make that "everybody and Peter."

If they wanted to up the ante they could've thrown in some melismas on the weak syllables.
ReplyDeleteI think it's got staying power.
ReplyDeleteObviously they're not the real monks from the 1960s - "Black Monk Time."
