Annals of Low Self-Esteem

Just for the record: The only pop star I have really resembled over the course of my life is the dork seated below.

Seriously -- that could be my fricking high school graduation picture.

And people wonder why I have issues.

Oh well, to give the little geek his due, at least his "She's Just My Style" is a really good Brian Wilson pastiche.

  1. Steve, don't feel bad, he resembles his father, a comic legend. One of my favorite GL songs. Way back I taught a girl to play bass, this was one of the songs we used for practice.

Just imagine how nervous and tense the studio musicians felt with Jerry overseeing everything (his money) And Gary doing a million takes to get the vocal track right. Wouldn't have wanted to have been there.

  2. And it features one of the earliest recordings of future drum god Jim Keltner!

  3. I read somewhere his vocals were overdubbed.

  5. I on the other hand, resemble Rob Reiner in his Meathead era.

  6. Yes his vocals were probably overdubbed and triple tracked.

  7. I enjoy a few of Gary Lewis' songs, but really - part of the "Legendary Masters Series"???

  9. Incidentally, there are like 30 tracks on that CD. Including studio chatter and outtakes.

  10. Guy named Ron Hicklin double-tracked Lewis's vocals live (it's complicated), and engineers buried Gary's voice even deeper in the mix. You can hear Lewis's voice "naked" on "Sealed with a Kiss." It's not pretty. But none of us are sticklers for authenticity. And I have a soft spot for "You Don't Have to Paint Me a Picture."
