Ohmigod, it's the Most Hideously Awful Early Clue to the New Direction Ever!

From 1986, and the very depths of Hell itself, please enjoy the unfortunately monikered Blow Monkeys and their ludicrously soul-free hit "Digging Your Scene."

Seriously -- these guys make Spandau Ballet look like the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

In any case, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded the first reader who gleans the clip's relevance to the theme of tomorrow's Weekend Listomania.

  7. Lousy lounge acts playing in front of plastic pretentious people? And boy that song and video is horrible. Completely forgot about this crap.

  9. This song was a hit? I remember the name of this band, but, up to now, have never heard anything from them. No big loss, apparently. Hmmm---Lamest songs of the 80's?

  10. Nope.

I have a fairly obvious clue, but I think I'll save it for a bit.

  11. Well, the Brits have been doing faux-soul ever since Mick and Eric first heard blues, so I can't say this is total dreck...just fourth-generation dreck.

Also, the lead singer (one Dr. Robert, btw) reminds me very much of Willy DeVille, who some silly people actually took seriously.

As to what the possible theme of the Weekend Listomania could be, I'm not really sure. Maybe it's bands with really stupid names?

  13. The clue is in the song title.

  14. Oh -- and I'm one of those people who took Will DeVille seriously, MB.

  19. Objectively, the elusive and insouciant Kenosha Kid came close enough to qualify, I think.

KK -- you're coveted No-Prize is on its way to you by underground axolotl railroad as we speak.

    Kudos, my friend!!!!
