Surf's Up

The surviving Beach Boys reunited, via their individual lawyers, at the Grammys on Sunday.

I miss Carl and Dennis something fierce, but it was much less horrible than I expected.

Actually, it was pretty good, even despite the enormous dickitude that is Mike Love.

  1. Is it just me or have Mike Love and John McCain become the same person?

  2. Given that McCain famously sang "Bomb Iran" the ironies abound.

Is that David Marks next to Dick Love?

  4. Despite, or maybe because of my low expectations I had an emotional response. I did not watch the Grammy's or even know they were on.
I too am perplexed by the fact that John McCain has apparently joined The Beach Boys. That is indeed David Marks standing next to him.

  5. Liked the Beach Boys's Good Vibrations but the Foster the People and Maroon 5 portions were completely cringe-worthy. They just didn't have the chops to pull it off, sorry. Oh yeah, I hate how Mike Love acts like he is the Beach Boys. Overall, I'm just glad that a bonified reunion could be had while most of the line-up was still alive.

  6. I actually liked the Foster the People stuff precisely because they were so clearly out of their depth.

Because you could tell they desperately wanted to be able to pull it off, which is to say they actually understood the music. They were in an odd sense paying tribute to their betters.

Jeez ... that miserable performance by Maroon 5 and Outer Limits (or whatever the hell their name is) makes you realize just what a great bunch of singers the Beach Boys really are.

    Thank you, Brian.

I'm with Steve...Foster the People didn't bother me so much but those Maroons must be stopped!

  10. And I thought it would be just me to think Foster and Maroon sucked.

  11. I was confused at first, but endured whatever it was before The Beach Boys came on.

  12. drat, was hoping for a David Marks and the Marksmen reunion!!!

  13. I thought Maroon 5 did a pretty good job. As for Foster the People... well, the singer was obviously reading a teleprompter. The best part of this reunion is how obviously Mike "Asshole" Love is going to get more and more pissed as this is going to be nothing but a Brian lovefest. I'm betting one of the Wondermints kicks him in the balls by the third gig.

  14. Speaking of the motherfucking scumbag, in that "30 years of the Beach Boys" box set there's a classic recording of the first time "Good Vibrations" was done live that features Mikey whining about trying to play "this woo-woo" thing. Fuck you, Mike. Fuck. You.

  15. And who in the crowd shots looked more confused: Glen Campbell or Lady Gaga?

  16. Nice product placement for the upcoming tour, asswipe. I hate that asshole Ryan Seacrest too. The first two bands bit the big one, I don't even know who the hell they were. Glad I watched The Walking Dead.

  17. can't blame GaGa and Glen for being confused what with those tenderfoots onstage but, uh Glen has an excuse.

  18. they could have included Glen Campbell in Good Vibrations. he's practically an original Beach Boy, and he's probably just as aware of his surroundings as Mike Love.

  19. "he's probably just as aware of his surroundings as Mike Love."

My guess - not for another year or two.
