Your Monday Moment of Words Fail Me: Special Maximum R&B Edition

From 1964, please enjoy The High Numbers...

...live at the Railway Hotel, performing The Miracles "I Gotta Dance to Keep From Crying.'

These guys later changed their name to something else, if memory serves. Have no idea what happened to them, of course.

Anybody else notice that Entwhistle looks like Pino Pallidino in this clip? Eerie!

  5. Yes, Steve, best wishes on your birthday. I was a dedicated reader of Stereo Review from the mid-70s to the early-90s and your reviews, more than anything else, compelled me to buy each issue. You turned me on to a lot of great albums (Marshall Crenshaw's first album, the Byrds" 60s classics, Moby Grape's debut, the first solo album by Nils Lofgren on A&M, to name just a few.) And some day (not now) I'll tell you an interesting story about that Marcus Hook "Natural Man" 45, which continues to elude me. By the way, love the Who, too. J. Lag

  6. Very cool clip, which I've never seen before. That said, this version is so dull compared to the Miracles' original, featuring not just one of Smokey's best vocals, but a smoking instrumental track and the great "Quarter To Three"-ish production.

This song was a Mod anthem, and I have no idea why it wasn't a bigger hit in the U.S. There ain't no justice, sometimes.

  9. Wow! Daltry never looked cooler, and I love Townshend's dance steps. Ahhh those were the daze.
