Your Monday Moment of "That Old Broad's Still Got It!"

"Dark Sunglasses." The first single off of Chrissie Hynde's new solo album.

Jeebus, that's just great. Melodic hooks, a sense of humor, and a vocal with enough sex appeal to induce cardiac arrest in a yak.

And here she is doing it for Jimmy Fallon. Unless my eyes deceive me, she's using a tiny little vintage Ampeg amp. If so, she really IS the coolest human being alive.

Have I mentioned that "Dark Sunglasses" is just great?

  1. Did you see her on Colbert? Steve obviously has a thing for older women (remember him and Jane Fonda?), and though we hate to think of Chrissie as an "older" woman, she's about 13 years older than him. He was pretty much lost it when she asked "Are you flirting with me?"(in a very flirtatious way).
Anyway, sounds like it will be a great album.

  2. I've been a fan from the get go. But this track isn't flooring me. It's not exactly a tambourine busting "977" performance is it? Hope the album's better than the first single.

  3. With regard to Chrissie's amp, from what glimpses I could catch of it, it looks like an Ampeg Reverbrocket.
That would make sense for her too.

Her voice just kills me. I almost don't care what she's singing.

  5. IMHO -- it's at least as good as just about everything on Pretenders II.

I'd kill to have a song that well written and hooky to my credit...

  6. "Lovers of Today." Massage, carress and kiss your baby to that one. So gooood. One of my favorite Chrissie vocals.

  7. Steve:

Can you point out all the hooks for me?

Do you agree that the video is stupid?

    It does have some cowbell.

  10. My 20 year old daughter, a Pretenders fan who played the tune and others from the album on her i-phone while we were cruising around today, said that she thinks Chrissie is going for the KT Tunstall audience.

I don't agree with that, but it cracked me up. She also told me she didn't like it that Chrissie was working with that "hipster" Bjorn Yttling.

    Kids these days.

  11. She's not playing through a Reverb Rocket (I have one). I believe it's a GVT 15-112.

  12. Hey buzzbabyjesus,

Wanna sell that amp? What year is it?

Just from the way the knobs were configured I figured it was a Reverbrocket. But they don't show the amp much on the footage.

    Cheers

  13. Buzzbabyjesus:

Does your Reverbrocket look like this one?

  14. Buzzbabyjesus:

    Is your ReverbRocket a vintage 2 or a 212?

    Just wondering.

  15. I watched the video again. Chrissie's amp looks a lot like a mid-1960's Reverbrocket 2. The front panel is very similar. Are there any experts out there who might know definitively?

It's been bugging me all day while roasting in Palm Springs. And since I have way too much time on my hands today:

Here's a pretty clear shot of Chrissie's amp on Fallon:

    Here's a 1966 ReverbRocket 2 [I think the 1965's are also similar]

    Do you see the similarity?
