It's Rock Novelty Records Week: Part V (Special Saving the Best For Last Edition)
From 2005, please enjoy alt-folkie icon Robbie Fulks and his absolutely fricking hilarious pastiche/homage/parody masterpiece "Fountains of Wayne Hotline."
Is that telegraphed, or is that just gratuitous coloration?
Saw Fulks by sheer accident when visiting my Nevada-based "legal consultant" at his home in Florida. It was a sunny pleasure mixed with shady business vacation.
One night we went to see Dave Alvin and Robbie was the opening act. This would be 1999. Dave's band featured Rick Shea, Greg Boaz along with Joe Terry & Bobby Lloyd Hicks from the Skeletons. The reason I mention them is that they also backed Robbie for half of his set. Fulks did originals mixed with covers of Leon Payne, Merle Haggard and The Hollies "On a Carousel." It was a great show. Alvin is always terrific but to have Fulks open was a nice bonus.
I laughed out loud just seeing that you'd highlighted my favorite moment in the song.
