Hey -- These Guys is Good!

Not exactly sure where or when this was shot -- looks like 1964, and it's obviously from some place where English is the national language -- but in any event, baby this is rock 'n' roll.
The songs are out of order but yes, definitely a 1964 show. I'm surprised they played a complete version of Twist & Shout - it was usually played as a shortened opener. My guess is the Australian tour in the summer of '64 - here's a setlist from Brisbane (the 2 songs missing from that video are I Wanna Hold Your Hand and All My Loving): Twist and Shout I Want to Hold Your Hand I Saw Her Standing There You Can't Do That All My Loving I Wanna Be Your Man She Loves You Till There Was You Roll Over Beethoven Can't Buy Me Love This Boy Long Tall Sally
George's guitar solo on "I Saw Her Standing There" (23:05 - 23:30) may be my favorite George live guitar solo ever. It takes off like few of his solos ever do. He seems to be riding with the music rather then directing the music and the results are joyous.

If Clapton was the legitimate heir to BB King then George was the legitimate heir to Scotty Moore, which is even cooler.

When they cared about actually playing (before the screams overwhelmed), they were great.

ReplyDeleteThat show was at the Festival Hall in Melbourne, June 17, 1964. Ringo had just returned to the band after surgery for tonsillitis.
