La Fin de la Semaine Essay Question: Special "Thoughts on the Stones" Edition

And no, not thoughts on the new album. Which I have avoided going on about here previously because I don't have all that much to say about it.

Other than, that while it doesn't dishonor their legacy, it mostly strikes me as sounding like a collection of middling Stones B-sides (which is not a bad thing) and that the only song that really, really rouses me from my pastoral torpor (unsurprisingly) is Keith's big slow number.

And I can live with that.

Anyway, reason I bring up the Stones is twofold. To begin with, I'd never seen this clip -- a remake of "Love in Vain" -- before a few days ago, and I don't know exactly when it was done and why, but it just knocks me out, and I thought I'd share.

Seriously, when people talk about those guys being the greatest rock-and-roll band in the world, that's the kind of thing they're talking about.

Secondly, I mention the Stones because, coincidentally (heh) they're the subject of this week's Weekend Essay Question.

And so to business. To wit:

...and your favorite obscure Stones track -- i.e.,not one of their hits, or even an often-referenced album cut -- is...?

In case you were wondering, mine is this one -- the ridiculously out of tune guitars and backing vocals notwithstanding. The song just kills me, and I always wanted to cover it.

And your choices would be...?

Discuss.

And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

  1. I believe this clip is part of this:

Stripped is a live album by the English rock band The Rolling Stones, released in November 1995 after the Voodoo Lounge Tour.
It contains eight studio recordings and six live tracks.

The studio sessions (eight recordings): on 3–5 March 1995, Tokyo and on 23–26 July 1995, Lisbon, recorded "live," i.e., without overdubs. The remaining eight tracks were acoustic studio re-recordings of songs from the Stones' previous catalogue, the exception being a cover of Willie Dixon's "Little Baby".

Paul in DK- She's a Rainbow was a hit. And I'm very fond of both sides. The B is a groove.

Now put on your thinking cap and come up with something more obscure:) I'm feeling playful. That means it's time for bed. My PT's gonna be here at 11. Lights Out. Hi Steve

  8. Could name many but narrowed it down to three:

Connection (from BETWEEN THE BUTTONS) - An infectious, energetic song that probably should have been a single.

Luxury (from IT'S ONLY ROCK'N ROLL)

Neighbors (from TATTOO YOU) - Was the B-side of the "Hang Fire" single, arguably should have been the A-side, love the guitar and sax solos AND Charlie's snare, which sounds, as Mr. Simels noted at the time, like a trash-can lid.

  10. ChrisE-

Connection should have been a single! It should have followed Ruby/LSTNT with All Sold Out as the B-Side. Woulda Rocked!

  13. 'Plunder My Soul'. There are a lot of obscure Stones recordings from the last 30 years that are just fabulous. 'Plunder' is the one that jumped into my ears as I pondered Steve's question.

Just to fuck with everyone's minds (and ears) here are some variations on the theme:

Best Rolling Stones song by The Beatles: 'Not a Second Time'.

Best Stones song by another band not The Beatles: 'Gone And Passed By' by The Chocolate Watch Band.

    Love the topic!

  17. Glad to see the other comments praising "Between the Buttons".

It was the first Stones album I bought - my older brother bought all the ones before that but he went off to college and we moved. I bought BTB and it was the first stereo lp I ever had.

I'll go with "Miss Amanda Jones"!

“Obscure” is pretty vague. Does Spider and the Fly count?
    Probably not to this crowd.
I’ve always been kind of partial to What to Do, with its sort of Beach Boys vibe.

  19. I'll be doing Love in Vain tomorrow night, in fact - as an instrumental, because I love Keith's guitar part and love Ya-Yas version for Bill's descending bass line, which takes the whole thing right back to Chicago. And I love Charlie's entrance in this clip. It could actually make me cry even before he left us, ever since which the Stones do not exist.

In this topic I, too, favor the Aftermath/Buttons axis: It's Not Easy, Out of Time, Flight 505, Amanda Jones, Who's Been Sleeping Here?

But earlier (Down the Road A Piece) and later (Casino Boogie) stuff also rings my chimes.
