Goodbye Brian

I'm still having trouble processing the head Beach Boys' passing; all I can really say is that it hit me much harder than I expected, and I suspect I'm not the only one who feels that way.

In any case, the above 2021 cover of one of his greatest songs, by fellow Angelenos Los Lobos, seems like an appropriate tribute.

Yes, it is. I had never heard it before today, actually.

My son broke the news to me. Earlier this year, he took my Music History class and in October fell in love with the Beach Boys after my lesson on Brian Wilson's songwriting. When my son graduated last Friday, we blasted the Beach Boys to honor his achievement. This news, like the news about Sly, is devastating.

I was crushed by the Sly news, but I had no problem listening to Sly & The Family, which I have been doing the last three days. Someone sent me a video of some kid playing "God Only Knows" on a toy piano and I couldn't handle it. I watched 10 seconds and lost it.

I p
retty much wrapped up my thoughts, kept. playing Brians Concert with Love and Mercy.
Let's put it this way - in 20 years I never added to my B/B collection until Brian released his debut solo album. After all that time this album was a must buy

Many thoughts and kudos to all the fine words so far.

Steve: at one time you posted a previous column wherein you eloquently argued for the importance and legitimacy of the Beach Boys in the rock pantheon. Can you repost/find. It was terrific.

And Los Lobos is a perfect choice as they may; the 'little band from East LA' , capture a California Hispanic/Latino zeitgeist for their corner of the California dream., in the same way the BB did. Great choice.

Well aware of their cover version - Sail On Sailor.
(2021) Surprised this hadn't crossed your desk - purchased their first album - " How Will The Wolf Survive" (1984) - Sail On Sailor (2021). I heard it while living in the Cultural Wasteland of SC. 😎
