La Fin de La Semaine Essay Question: Special "A Rose Among Thorns" Edition

Okay, I'm still decompressing from our quite wonderful Scottish vacation. So without any further hoo hah let's get directly to the subject of our new weekend business.

To wit:

...and the post-Elvis rock/pop/folk/r&b song/record you absolutely adore and couldn't live without by a major league band/solo artist the rest of whose work you otherwise couldn't give a shit about is...???

Discuss.

My pick to click? Gotta be this one.

Hey -- the freaking Cure, when I'm not giggling at head honcho Robert Smith's fashion choices, mostly bores me to scowling fidgets. But wow -- if there was a more gorgeous three and a half-plus minutes of anything in the last forty or so years, I for one haven't heard it.

Alrighty then -- what would your choice(s) be?

And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

It's tempting to just pick a one-hit-wonder (Mungo Jerry!) but that feels like cheating.
Sooo, I'll stick my neck out and pick... Procol Harum. That live WSOP with the Danish Symphony and also the original is "can't live without it" level. The rest of their stuff, great as much of it is, is mostly comfortably absent from my life.

Yeah -- one hit wonders really shouldn't be in the running here. The idea is artist with a substantial career that you just don't care about except for one song. 😎

I would go for the song Hey Ya by Outkast. No fan at all of Hip Hop music but this song is awesome including the video.

Totally agree about “Friday”. My son is into the Cure, loves the whole Goth vibe; but I’ve heard nothing that I like in the least - until this. Which is, as you say, just great.
I’m not a David Bowie fan, but “Rebel, Rebel” is undeniable.

Steve, what is so funny is that in the 1980s, I really loved the Cure and immediately hopped off the bus when "Friday I'm in Love" come out. I hate this song. Ha!

Rebel Rebel — a big thumbs up, despite like you not being a Bowie fan. I should add that it’s one of the great regrets of my life that I never, er you know, with a Goth gal.

Looks like 'Rebel Rebel' has been taken (I like 'Golden Years,' too), so I'll go with that guilty pleasure 'Hot Legs' by a Scot for whom I care not.

Robert Smith's voice -- and it turns out his face -- make me want to punch him; I know of no other artist that elicits this reaction in the conflict-averse non-fighter person that I am. But if a catchier six-and-a-half minutes exist than the extended 12" remix of Close To Me , I've yet to hear it. His singing's egregiously punchable in that one, so it says something that I love it anyway. They have a couple others I like, too, so the Cure won't qualify for your question. What does is We're Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister, not only the only song I like by them, but the only hair metal song I like, period. Others: Billy Joel's Matter Of Trust, Frankie Valli's (standing in for the Four Seasons, too) Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You. To prove it ain't a 'NY-NJ' aversion, there's also Red Hot Chili Peppers' Breaking The Girl and Zappa's Apostrophe.

Chicago @ '68 -- Fillmore East.
They stormed the stage as band of Valkyrie's.
Post Terry, they were the face of Yacht Rock
