FAVORITE OR LEAST FAVORITE POST-ELVIS POP/ROCK/FOLK/SOUL/WHATEVER SONG/RECORD BY A BAND (OR DUO) WITH ONLY TWO SINGERS HARMONIZING UP FRONT!!!
No arbitrary rules whatsoever, but to my surprise I'm not mostly talking about sibling harmony acts. Also, if you attempt to nominate anything by the Byrds or Beach Boys, i.e. groups that normally feature three or four singers -- The Association, anyone? -- I will come to your house and pummel you severely. That said, however, I haven't decided if The Beatles are eligible or not, so at your discretion. 😎
And now, without further ado, my totally Top of My Head Top Seven is:
7. Chad and Jeremy -- A Summer Song
God, that's gorgeous. Seriously -- some days I think those guys were the most underrated of the British Invasion.
6. The Everly Brothers -- Don't Run and Hide
That was written by the Hollies Clarke-Hicks-Nash triumvirate, but I actually prefer the Everlys' cover.
5. Zager and Evans -- In the Year 2525
One of my traditional candidates for Worst Record Ever Made.
4. The Indigo Girls -- Closer to Fine
You know -- because (in the immortal words of Mick Jagger) you like to have a couple of chicks in there occasionally.
3. Stealer's Wheel -- Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine
Early Gerry Rafferty, obviously. I literally wore out the grooves on my copy of that 45 when it was new.
2. Tom and Jerry -- Hey Schoolgirl
This was one of the first records I bought with my own lunch money. It was a huge hit in NYC for obvious reasons; I'm not sure exactly how it fared in the rest of the country, although I seem to recall seeing them lip-synch it on Bandstand. Whatever happened to those kids?
And the number one Two People Singin' Like Boids act of all time simply has to be...
1. The Lemon Twigs -- Look Out For Your Mind
That video is brand new, i.e. it just dropped (as today's hepsters say) this morning at 10am EST. Absolutely fantastic, and man -- these guys have a work ethic like nobody's business.
Alrighty then -- what would YOUR choices be?
And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

Individual songs, pal. Sorry to be a pedant about this. 😡
DeleteFour Strong Winds Ian & Sylvia.
Deleteemmylou harris and mark knopfler - why worry
ReplyDeletewillie nelson and julio iglesias - for all the girls i've loved before
Since choosing a Byrds song is not allowed, I'll opt for Jon Auer & Ken Stringfellow of The Posies and their cover of "Lady Friend." They sure sing like siblings.
ReplyDeleteOooh -- good one!!! 😎
DeleteGram Parsons and Emmylou Harris - A Song For You is a favorite of mine.
ReplyDelete- Paul in DK
Gene Clark and Carla Olson - Jokers are wild
ReplyDeleteScrolling down the list, I came to "In the Year 2525" and was about to cancel my membership in the Powerpop Fan Club when I noticed the final line. Don't do that to me! All the others are great.
ReplyDeleteHere in Illinois, we've had a lot to apologize for (Styx, REO Speedwagon, the Blues Brothers, et al)– and in that spirit, I will cop to the fact that this wretched track ("Exordium & Terminus" WTF?!) hit number one on the local hit parade.
DeleteOkay, so the ML Twins got you in the mood for today's challenge...
ReplyDeleteI've got to go back to the Rushmore of Power Pop:
Dwight Twilley Band– I'm on Fire
To partially salvage the honor of Anonymous from the rules oligarch; Please check them out Monsieur Simels;
ReplyDeleteCactus Blossoms - "Mississippi" a more Lynchian Everly Brothers
Milk Carton Kids - "Younger Years"
Luluc- "Rewarding Melody" and "Spring"
Down Like Silver - 'Wolves"

Steve:
ReplyDeleteBy the way I believe I stole your copy of the Stealers Wheels' single from you! I'm sure I claimed I was just borrowing at the time to tape it!
Captain Al
Oddly enough, it was mono. Which was unusual for a major label single that late, ie 1973.
DeleteLoggins & Messina - Your Mama Don't Dance
ReplyDeleteEmmy Lou &: Nicolette Larson -
Hello Stranger (Elite Hotel)
Duhh - Peter Asher & Gordon Waller
ReplyDeleteI Go To Pieces... 😉
"Weather With You" and/or "It's Only Natural" by Crowded House. Any song where Neil and Tim harmonize is sublime
ReplyDeleteJerry Lee Lewis & Willie Nelson, true duet
ReplyDeleteJambalaya
Upon further review...
ReplyDeleteIf "post-Elvis" means since the dawn of Elvis...
The Louvin Brothers: Knoxville Girl (1956)
Robbie Fulks and Kelly Willis - "Parallel Bars"
ReplyDeleteOkay -- The Beatles. "We Can Work It Out" and "The Two of Us."
ReplyDeleteGeorge and Tammy - "We're Not The Jet Set"
ReplyDeleteJohnny and June - "Jackson"
Waylon and Jessie - "I Ain't The One"
Favorites: Cardinal "Singing To The Sunshine", from their self-titled album released in 1994. It's a haunting song to begin with, and Eric Matthews' and Richard Davies' voices mesh beautifully on the twin lead vocals.
ReplyDeleteThis next one may be cheating slightly, since I'm not sure she sings the entire lead vocal with him, but Suzanne Vega with Pat DiNizio on the Smithereens' "In A Lonely Place".
Also: Glenn Frey and Don Henley on "Good Day In Hell", from the Eagles' third album ON THE BORDER.
