More Birthday Salutations!

More big Powerpop birthday greetings go out to hyper-talented Aimee Mann, born this day in 1960 in Midlothian, Virginia. Coincidentally, it is also the birthday of my lovely wife, who is also a huge Aimee fan. Happy Birthday sweetie! How's that for synergy? Cheers, lovely ladies!

Here's my fave Aimee tune from P.T. Anderson's either love it or hate it 1999 film Magnolia.

Sheng Ri Kuai Le's to all the Birthday People! (something about being conceived in deep winter?)

Aimee has produced beautiful work throughout her career but I maintain that her songs with 'Til Tuesday are the most unique and under-appreciated. Sadly. a lot of people long ago threw out the entirety of the 80s pop baby with the vapid Top-40 bathwater.

slig,

You may be on to something, but I just can't get past the dated 80s sound. The songs just don't shine through for me.

Thanks kid, and happy birthday to your wife too.

Aimee's music for Magnolia is perhaps my favorite soundtrack music for any film since the early 70s. Even better than "Save Me" is "Wise Up", which works perfectly with the director's jump cutting to each of the major characters singing a stanza. That scene, the underlying melody and the stark reality of the lyrics caught me so offguard on first viewing that I found myself sobbing uncontrollably. Her best lyrics are like that - they cut to the bone.
