My longtime hero and genuine power pop legend MARC JONSON pays tribute to the late Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens.
Seriously -- this is simply glorious. "They turned their amps up loud and smashed those songs to smithereens."
Have a great weekend, everybody.

Excellent. I think Pat would approve.
Wow. Cool.
Great. Glad I got to see them.
Another nugget I'd have missed. Thanks Steve. I was a young college grad in '81 when I first heard The Smithereens. After my digest that I had not been indoctrinated earlier I was in that sweet spot that post-Beatles and with the emerging 80's synth-pop was becoming absent from. Yep, The Smitereens had it all because they also ROCKED! After their great wall of sound grabbed you it was Pat's lyrics and song craft that often set the hook. This was one fantastic intersection of guys keeping a 60's to 70's quality of rock alive. Here's the deal: CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED AS ARE MY OTHER FAVORITE PERIOD BAND, THE HOODOO GURUS. Keep Rocking Boys & Girls! I don't give a shit if we're old or young...great music is great music an The Smithereens were LOADS of great music.
Oh wow. Didn’t predict this xD I heard The Smithereens only once with “Behind the Wall of Sleep”. I like the sound of this though. Also, that reference back to themselves and their own art is so witty!
