That's Randy Meisner, who'd go on to be a founding member of both Poco and The Eagles, on bass; the song itself was written by either Brewer or Shipley (of "One Toke Over the Line" fame); the group was managed and produced by the Greene-Stone team that also managed and produced the Buffalo Springfield. I know for a fact that this got a fair amount of airplay in the NYC area in 1966 because I used to hear it a lot on WMCA-AM and, in fact, was moved to go out and buy the damn thing at Sam Goody. Apparently not big in the rest of the country, however.
In any case, why it wasn't anthologized on the original Lenny Kaye Nuggets compilation is a mystery that will never be solved. Unless somebody here knows Lenny and can ask him.

Donovan with the Jagged Edge - Season of the Witch (saw him do this at The Trip months before the album. Blew me away. The Jagged Edge was a great back-up band. My uncle got me in during Spring '66. I was only 11. Liked it so much that my mom took me and two girlfriends to the weekend "all ages" matinees). Pandora's Box was still open then, too. I only went there four times. It was a happening place-more people outside than inside. Saw the Misunderstood there one of the few times they left Berdoo. Nobody knew what hit 'em. Saw the Seeds and the Fabs there too. And the Groupies. Man, there were a lot of "club bands" in Hollywood back then.
Steve: The Poor. They were better live than the records. Pretty tight. Saw 'em three times by accident. Second billed to Buffalo Springfield late '66. Opening for Kaleidoscope at the Magic Mushroom, which used to be the Bob Eubanks' Cinnamon Cinder. They also played Bido Lito's when it was on its last legs. That show was a total fluke since we thought Spirit was playing. When they formed the Stone Canyon Band with Rick Nelson and Tom Brumley, I saw them in Woodland Hills. Opening band was The Flying Burrito Brothers (still with Gram).
VR - been backpacking in Utah on the Hayduke Trail. Most psychedelic.
