La Fin de La Semaine Essay Question: Special "La Crèmes de la Crèmes " Edition

Okay, we're back -- safe and sound and both physically and spiritually refreshed -- from our vacation in France.

And consequently raring to go with more of the insouciant postings you've come to expect from this here blog.

Which leads us inexorably to today's business. To wit:

...and the members of a freaking fantastic supergroup you would assemble from currently alive pop/rock/folk/jazz/pop/r&b musicians -- of any gender or age -- would be...???

Discuss.

BTW, kudos to a certain Shady Dame of my acquaintance for giving me the above idea. As usual, she's working cheap, I'll tell you that for free.

And in case you're wondering -- my candidates for such a supergroup would be these guys.

I bring all this up because, as somebody pointed out to me recently, we haven't had any supergroups in what seems like ages, so certainly the time is ripe.

I mean seriously -- can you imagine how great those dudes would be together as a band, even in their current ancient states?

Alrighty then -- who would YOUR choices be?

And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

On the folkier/Americana side: Dylan, Willie Nelson, Billie Strings and Alison Kraus

I'm unfamiliar with Billie Strings, but I'll do the research, as todays youngs are wont to say. 😎

I don't know much about him except that he's an amazing acoustic guitarist.

Beato interviewed him - his videos show one helluva player

Off the top of my head -
Brad Paisley, Mark Knopfler (dual guitars)
Leland Skylar (Bass) Stuart Copeland (drums) Chuck Leavell (Keyboards)
Paul Rodgers, needs no introduction

Could be a hot one !

I can't top your original selection. It almost makes too much sense, like, hurry up and do that already!

I'd go with Andy Partridge, Neil Finn, Elvis Costello on guitars, Joe Jackson on keys, Steve Kilbey on bass, and Pete Thomas on drums

Who sings lead? 😎

This one's obvious to me.

Have Carl Palmer ( ... since Emerson and Lake have both passed and he seemingly now has nothing better to do) replace the late Neal Peart of Rush ( ... since that band is in need of a new and suitably flashy drummer).

re; Rush - Anika Niles, new drummer
Steve down the road your query could be those who passed in your Supergroup

Robert Pollard from Guided By Voices on guitar, Marshall Crenshaw on second guitar, Glen Burtnick or Graham Maby on bass and Dennis Diken on drums. They record songs that are very Beatles- and Who-influenced but are in fact their own songs.

Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams together might be interesting. Music for marginals.

You have no idea how much I love Graham Maby on bass. 😎

Rob said...

Ok - some might know that I also have an affection for Country/Bluegrass CBGB 😉
Most you probably never heard of but now
Once again Billy Strings on guitar. Jerry Douglas, dobro - Joe Fick, slap bass - Gary Morse, pedal steel - Jerry Hahn, percussion (string cheese incident)
Vocals - hows about Dwight Yoakim and Marty Stuart on vocals -( you get in addition one of the best mandolin players on the planet )

Paul Rodgers - vox
Chris Spedding - guitar
John Paul Jones - bass
Ian Paice - drums

Making a late-night run at this:

Todd Rundgren / Rick Nielsen / Mike Mills / Jody Stephen's (or Prairie Prince)

steve simels said...

Ooh -- I like that one a lot. A real lot. 😎

Rob said...

Rundgren and Nelson have the same sensibilitys - that would be an interesting collaboration - understanding Todd, I'm surprised he never thought of it. After all he played with Daryl Hall

steve simels said...

Okay -- the three remaining Rolling Stones, with Dave Grohl on drums and Jack Casady on bass. 😎

I like your thinking Simels!

Gene Simmons, Mike Love, Don Henley, and Ted Nugent as... "The Biggest Assholes In Rock 'n Roll History"!
They were a larger band when Chuck Berry and Lou Reed were still alive.
I would only like to see them get together so I could heckle all of them at once outside a recording studio or a concert hall. No way I'd ever pay to see them.

steve simels said...

Heh. 😎

How could I have forgotten Kid Rock???
