Picture, 1000 Words, Etc.

The original Pretenders lineup, posed about a year after their first album helped them conquer the world, as photographed by the great Chalkie Davies.

Has there been a more charismatic bunch in rock since this lot? I don't really think so.

I should add that Chalkie, who graciously consented to let me post the above, is a brilliant and charming guy who once slept on my couch for a couple of days sometime in late 1979, for reasons that we needn't go into at this time.

You can see more of his work -- and boy, has he been around -- over here.

Chrissie has to be standing on a box, right?

Every time I spin Pretenders and/or Pretenders II, I feel sad that rock music lost out on the brilliance of James Honeyman-Scott.

The guys on the left are high as kites. Chrissie's not entirely amused, and the drummer, as usual, is holding it together.

I agree with Shriner (and buzzbabyjesus). Pretenders I is so amazing. I often wonder what the dynamic in the band was in those original recording sessions. They clearly knew what they wanted to do and delivered with a vengeance. Tattoo Love Boy is so great the way it cranks along, stops on a dime, then screams ahead.

Chrissie's the only person on Earth who looked cool in a puffy shirt.

Chrissie would look cool in a burlap sack.

Just saying.

It's funny (not haha funny) that I love playing Pretenders (I), and even Pretenders II, but the photos, like these, make me a little sad.

Yeah, I know, high out of their minds, but Jesus they sounded and looked and just came off fantastic!
