From 1973, and the b-side of "Think," please enjoy the Godfather of Soul and his, shall we say, highly personal cover of the Beatles' "Something."
Yes, this was actually released to a largely unbelieving world.
It's never been on an album or CD, however, so I think we can be excused for having overlooked this for all these years. In any case, it's a lot more idiosyncratic than, oh, Al Green's relatively faithful cover of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."

Cocaine is a helluva drug.
Never liked the song. Now I think I like it even less.
I remember this from the time, and I laughed. His version is certainly a little different, and I'm still laughing.
I'm lucky to have a Hot 100 Billboard chart book. The number of singles James Brown released is insane. So I guess this can fall thru the cracks.
Knucklehead record collector that I am, I always grab covers of "Something" when I find them. The guitar solo is so much a part of the song I always like to hear how others employ it. A moot point in this case....
Methinks Soul Brother # 1 was snorting the PCP by this time.
Apologies to Steve for stepping on his line.
He did a similar take on "Georgia on my Mind" back in the day. Lots of percussive asides and little giggles. Very little sense that he knew where the hell he was. Not a great ballad singer.
Maybe because I danced 3 feet in front of him with a couple black girls while being drenched in his sweat I think this is anything but funny.
“Not a great ballad singer.” ??? “Please Please Please” “it’s a Man’s World” “Try Me”. More by request.
Like Blue Ash Fan, I’m not a fan of the song or the record, so I prefer this to the original, even if it is only tenuously connected to the song as published.
