From 1997, and a tribute album (One Step Up/Two Steps Back)I somehow managed to miss, please enjoy the legendary Ben. E. King and a quite lovely cover of Bruce Springsteen's holiday classic "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)."
The arrangement takes a little while to get going, but King sings it quite idiomatically, I think.
Anyway, Happy 4th, everybody.

Produced by Dennis Diken and Dave Amels.
Happy 4th!
It just seems so strange to me that Ben E. King or his producers would choose 4th of July (Sandy) to cover.
It's a better than okay recording but not one of the all-time Bruce cover versions. Kind of all over the place and Ben E. seems a little unsure how to sing it at certain times.
Very interesting find.

Who would have thought about BEK doing a cover of Sandy? I certainly wouldn't and I'm glad Steve unearthed this one because it's different flavor does work to a lesser degree but still quite nice. I understand more when he said Dennis Diken was involved.
