Music lovers and professional musicians at Power Pop are sure to enjoy a new movie, The Sales Girl, that's a terrific contemporary combination of comedy and drama. And that's because of the way that rock 'n roll compliments the movie's unusual plot.
The main storyline of the 123-minute flick focuses on the relationship between first year college student Saruul and 40-ish Katya, the owner of a sex shop in an unnamed city in Mongolia (most likely Ulaanbaatar, the capitol).
Saruul was offered the sales job by a classmate whose street injury -- shown in a very funny opening scene -- has incapacitated her for the time being.
Both characters, Saruul and Katya, will stay in your memory, long after the movie ends.
Rock songs accompany -- by my count -- 10 scenes in the movie. Most of the scenes are shot on location, so, in effect, The Sales Girl also promotes the city as a great travel destination.
Short version: Check out The Sales Girl, available from Film Movement, with English sub-titles on DVD or streaming, over at Amazon HERE.

Thanks, Drew -- looks like a hoot!!!
But which, thematically, leads us to this weekend's business. To wit.
...and your favorite (or least favorite) post-Elvis pop/rock/folk/soul/blues/country/hip-hop song referencing -- blatantly or obliquely -- what my mom used to refer to as "X-E-S spelled backwards" in its title or lyrics is...?
Discuss.
And in case you're wondering, here's my candidate.
Swear to god, there are some days I think that may be the last great rock-and-roll record ever made.
Okay -- what would YOUR choices be?
And have a great weekend everybody!!!

Randy Newman - You Can Leave Your Hat On
... just so's I don't cite the usual suspects.
Is this just a test to see how many Prince songs we can name off the top of our heads?
"The Bishop And The Actress" from Joe Jackson's latest.
The song "Bed-Jamming" by Lee Perry would be my first choice here. It has a good melody as well.

Little Red Riding Hood - Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs!
Captain Al
Jackson Browne's "Rosie"

To go *right* over the edge, there's this tasteful little ditty by Boston's own Human Sexual Response (band). Performed on live TV, no less.
There were, apparently, repercussions.

"Pull Up to the Bumper" by Grace Jones, although I can't for the life of me imagine what it's about.
Maybe too soon, but I propose this as a tribute.
Martin Mull - Licks Off Of Records ("I see you gettin' all warm and runny....")
Lucinda Williams: Right in Time
Randy Newman: Maybe I'm Doing it Wrong
John Hiatt: Since His Penis Came Between Us
The Who: Squeeze Box
I have been using Mull’s “warm and runny” line for ages.😛
I'll vouch for that :-)
Sweet Geraldine - The Weasels
Captain Al
Best:
Graham Parker’s “Hotel Chambermaid” is great.
Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” is a great garage rocker - killer guitar from Brian May, Freddie Mercury sings the pants off of it (double entendre intended!), sleazy but not too sleazy lyric…remains the only Queen song I’ll always listen all the way through.
The Who, “Pictures of Lily”, the sense of humor is part of what set the Who apart from boring sludgefests like Led Zep.
Warren Zevon, “Genius”, off his penultimate album “My Ride’s Here”, some wickedly funny lyrics and a string quartet!
Small Faces, “Tin Soldier”, Steve Marriot at his best, and P.P. Arnold must have been something else to inspire this song.
Tommy Tutone, “Cheap Date”, a killer song off their first album, should have been a hit.
Donna Summer, “Hot Stuff”, some nice guitar, she sings it like she means it, what’s not to like?
Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Relax”, ‘80s cliches abound but they’re irresistible; Frankie say relax…
Worst:
Any rap/hiphop “music” of course, but of songs that have actual, y’know, music, here’s a few that haven’t stood the test of time:
Rod Stewart, “Tonight’s the Night” and “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” - the beginning of the end for Rod the Mod.
Berlin, “Sex (I’m A…), Teri Nunn tries to fake it with the best of ‘em, but it’s unintentionally hilarious and the ‘80s cliches doom it.
Beatles, “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road”, a perfect illustration of the problem with the White Album, stupid filler crap like this, “Ob-La-Di”, “Birthday”, etc.
Lucinda Williams - Essence
Berlin - Sex (I'm A ...)
Rolling Stones - Cocksucker Blues (not my favorite but just because)
Denise Lasalle - Lick It Before You Stick It
Leonard Cohen - Light As the Breeze
Warren Zevon - Poor Poor Pitiful Me (Jackson Browne meets Jesse James with a Waring blender)
Pretenders - Tattooed Love Boys (of the gang bang rape variety)
Procol Harum - Luskus Delph (another just because)
Otis Redding/Black Crowes - Hard to Handle (honorable mention for Patti Drew's version) (Pigpen's is not sexy ... at all)
Led Zeppelin - Custard Pie (all pie is good pie)
Deep Purple - Knockin' at Your Back Door
David Bowie - Width of a Circle
Donovan - Mellow Yellow
Derek & the Dominos - Roll It Over
Frank Zappa/Mothers - Mud Shark-What Kind of Girl Do You Think We Are?-Bwana Dik-Latex Solar Beef-Do You Like My New Car?
Cramps - Can Your Pussy Do the Dog
Jane Birkin & Serge - ... Moi non plus
Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues, Suck On the Jugular
VR
Hawk Tuah Blues - Three-Ball Two-Johnson One-Eye Willie Montanez
Best:
Moe Berg wrote and sang some insightful and/or funny songs about S-E-X as leader of Canadian band The Pursuit Of Happiness, such as Ten Fingers, Looking For Girls and Down On Him from LOVE JUNK, and Food, Something Physical and Forbidden Fruit from ONE-SIDED STORY.
Iggy Pop & The Stooges - Shake Appeal
MC5 - Looking At You
Zappa/Mothers - Dinah-Moe Humm
Runaways - You Drive Me Wild
Beach Boys - Feel Flows (if it counts)
Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
