La Fin de la Semaine Essay Question: Special "Hello Young Lovers You're Under Arrest" Edition

Hey, it's Valentines Day!

And in its honor, from 2025 and their fab/gear just released new album Aces Eights & Heartreaks, please enjoy The Shang Hi Los and the sublimely 80s/Blondie-ish confection that is their "Monsieur Valentine."

Seriously -- that gets my vote for Best Song of the Year so far.

In any case, you can find out more about those kids -- including where to buy/hear more of the album -- over at their official website HERE.

And of course, all that leads us to the weekend's business. To wit:

...and your favorite (or least favorite) post-Elvis pop/rock/folk/soul/country love-themed song is...???

No arbitrary rules whatsoever -- your song can be happy, sad, directed at a specific object of affection, or just a general kind of lovey-dovey sentiment. However you're feeling today.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, my candidate (and I won't specify whether it's my fave or least) is...

...and ain't that something?

Okay -- what would YOUR nominees be?

And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

So what does "post-Elvis" mean? Connie seems way too early. And as Edward said, too many love songs to choose from, especially if we can go back to the stone age.

post Elvis means post his first Sun Records release in 1954. "Stupid Cupid" came out in 1958...

"Sunrise" - The Who (really Pete Townshend solo). I know he's mostly singing to god but it's the most beautiful love song I've ever heard.

Marshall Crenshaw - "This Is Easy" and "They Never Will Know": A couple of gorgeous songs - the former a rocker, the latter a ballad - that bookend his 1987 album MARY JEAN & 9 OTHERS. Ah, those background vocals and guitar solos.

I have a soft spot for Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open the Door” because (a) it’s a good song, and (b) in 2001, when I saw PT in a small theater doing a solo acoustic performance, he introduced the song by saying, “This is a happy little love song. I write millions of them.”

Others…Warren Zevon’s “Accidentally Like a Martyr” is beautiful and moving; one of my favorites. As far as worst, too many to list.
