Two Great Pop/Rock Hits of the Sixties That in a Post-9/11 World Wouldn't Have Had a Chance at Airplay...

...for obvious and very stupid reasons.

Gene Pitney -- "Mecca"

Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs -- "Wooly Bully."

Obviously, the terrorists have won.

I had no idea Gene Pitney ever sung anything in Spanish, that he sung in Spanish about a hajj to Mecca, or that he had a reason to. His record label tried various things to pump up his career, even pairing him with George Jones for a few albums in 1965 and 1966. Those were among the weakest in George's career.

I now have to wonder if Pitney ever found his personal Mecca. Doubtful from the sound of it.

Obviously, the title of "Wooly Bully" is a thinly-veiled attack on the sham-full record of Uncle Sam's imperialism...

Indefinite detention, warrantless surveillance, targeted assassinatino of U.S. citizens:

yeah, the terrorists won.

They exploited our tendency to sheepishly allow our government to terrorize us with inchoate, unidentified "threats" in order to build a sustained industry of fear-mongering anti-terrorism.

Wait; I forgot why we're here.

Anybody here like Badfinger's "No Matter What". . . ?

Oish -- I didn't realize I'd downloaded the Spanish version. Which is actually even better, given the political point I was making.

Heh!

Band I was in in '67/'68 did "Wooly Bully" because it was on the radio at the time.

steve A, check your wayback machine, Sam's tune was a hit summer of '65, possibly the greatest year for rock and roll radio.

Unfortunately I was preparing for Kindergarten that fall instead of hitting the teen dance spots.

Today's record company would have changed their name to Uncle Sam and the Heroes, dressed them as Green Berets and turned Wooly Bully into a muslim stompin' war chant.
