And Speaking of Gorgeous...

Emitt Rhodes -- the power pop genius who wrote and sang these wonderful songs when he was a freaking kid ..

...has just released his first new solo album in 43 years.

I'll review it next week, but in the meantime, here's a track from his first solo album that should tell you exactly why expectations for the new one are running so high.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Let's not forget that Fairport Convention had the good taste to cover "Time Will Show The Wiser", a song that Rhodes wrote which appeared on the Merry Go Round's album, on their very first album. It's the lead-off track, as a matter of fact. Looking forward to hearing his new release - and I hope he makes some money off of it.

God, that first solo album...yet another of the amazing goodies I found in Musicland's 33¢ bin. Dunno why I got it, even...it was on Dunhill, maybe...? (Back when you kind of trusted labels that put out good stuff–hell, I'd buy practically *anything* on WB/Reprise, especially if it had those John Mendelsohn "liner note" inserts.) But fell in love with it from the moment the needle hit the first groove.

Wow. He looks very different. He was such a cutie back them. Him and Jackson Browne were adorable. The Merry-Go-Round was a pretty good live band. They were ubiquitous around these parts in 1967. They opened for everybody (I think I mentioned that they opened for the Airplane and Doors in Anaheim).

First time I saw them was with the Prunes and Standells in the Valley. They also played the Riverside Youth Center with The Light. That was before it was transformed into The Purple Haze. Jesus, they opened for everyone from Canned Heat, the Youngbloods, Count Five, to the Seeds. They were always good, equipment permitting. They did the Teenage Fair at the Palladium too. Another cool gig was when they played with The Hour Glass and the late Jimmy Greenspoon's band pre-Three Dog Night. RIP Cory Wells, BTW.

Got all Emitt's solo stuff, which is OK but spotty. For me, I like the Merry-Go-Round stuff the best.

Anxious to hear the material he's worked up in the last four decades.
