Weekend Listomania: Special "DJ Shaggy" Edition

[I originally posted a version of this so long ago I can't even deal with the guilt. Consequently, I've rewritten a lot of it and swapped in some new entries, and blah blah blah. Enjoy!!! -- S.S.]

Well, it's Friday, and my beloved pussycat Mickey Six-Toes© has survived another week without having been devoured au poivre by marauding non-citizens of Ohio.

Whew. Although who knows -- if I was to nod off even briefly, it could get ugly.

But in the meantime, here's a fun little project to help us all wile away the darkening hours:

Best or Worst Post-Elvis Record Referencing Hair (or Hair Care Products or Hair-dos or Whatever) in Either Its Title or Lyric Or Band/Artists Name!!!

No arbitrary rules.

Oh wait -- if you nominate the crappy theme song (best known in the version by The Cowsills) from the world's crappiest Broadway musical, I will come to your house and slap you within an inch of your life.

Sorry -- that's just the way it is.

And my totally Top of My Head(Hah!!!) Top Eight is/are:

8. Lady Gaga -- Hair

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Gaga's rip-off of that titular show tune I mentioned above probably saved some poor deeply sensitive kid's life, despite the fact that it's a piece of utter pompous crud in the abstract. But hey -- I felt obligated to include something recorded in the 21st century.

7. Nazareth -- Hair of the Dog

I've had a soft spot for these guys ever since they turned Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight" into a thoroughly convincing piece of pop-metal (I've always wondered what Joni thought about it, come to think). This one, of course, deserves a special wing in the Cowbell Hall of Fame.

6. The Crew Cuts -- Sh-Boom

To this day, I can't figure if this is sad period schlock or some kind of interesting white-guy doo-wop. Your thoughts?

5. CSNY -- Almost Cut My Hair

Very silly stuff, thank you Mr. Crosby, but the Stills/Young guitar interplay is awesome, no?

4. Daddy Cool -- Teenage Blues

"I've been thinking a lot about getting a job, but I'm paranoid about my hair" has to be one of the greatest opening lines not just in pop music but in the entire history of literary endeavor going back to the Greeks. Or so I thought when I originally wrote that; I could be wrong. In any event, it's the work of one of the Great Lost Aussie Bands, and you need to hear the entirety of that album, trust me. Order a vinyl copy over at Amazon for the ridiculously inexpensive price of $8.70 HERE.

3. The Morells -- Growin' A Beard

An ode to the uses and cultivation of whiskers by the greatest party band of them all (they were The Skeletons in a later incarnation). Seriously -- I've said this before, but if I'd had an unlimited budget for a shindig and could have hired any rockers in the world as the featured entertainment, these are the guys I would have hired. And yes, I would have chosen them over NRBQ.

2. Syd Barrett -- Terrapin

"Well, oh baby, my hair's on end about you." BTW, and to give you an idea of just how long ago I first wrote this, I originally referenced the Smashing Pumpkins 2009 cover version and Billy Corgan's sad and pathetic cueball noggin in this slot.

Wow -- is it just me, or does anybody else totally not miss those pretentious putzes?

And the Numero Uno follicularly-fabulous tune of them all is obviously...

1. The Lovin' Spoonful -- Bald Headed Lena

And speaking of cueball noggins, heh heh. That's the late great Zal Yanovsky on lead vocals and "electric gorgle" (or so it says on the second Spoonful album liner notes) BTW.

Alrighty, then -- and what would your choices be?

And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

"almost cut my hair" - very melodramatic but even now, in an ironic mood, i like it - although "if 6 was 9" by jimi hendrix [well covered by todd rundgren] responds "if all the hippies cut off their hair, i don't care"

and, long, long before either of these - or so it seems, although it was just a decade - "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb" - Edd Byrnes and Connie Stephens" - from my pre-teen years - here they are acting it out for Dick Clark

Love the Morrells. I believe the great Ben Vaughn wrote "Growin' a Beard." Here's a video of the band playing for the lunch crowd in Chicago, 1982. Wow, Donnie Thompson, a great unsung guitarist.

@danny1959, love that Poodles song!
And I confess that “Almost Cut My Hair” is actually one of my favorite David Crosby tunes, although I’ll also confess it’s a pretty short list…

Others…Quadrophenia is all over this topic, including the fourth song on side 1, “Cut My Hair”. When I saw Townshend solo live acoustic a couple of decades ago, he played “Cut My Hair” on the piano; very cool.

Worst…I’ll nominate “Signs” from the unlamented Five Man Electrical Band.

Here are some more:

The Spider and the Fly – Rolling Stones - Sit up, fed up, low down, go round down to the bar at the place I'm at. Sitting drinking, superficially thinking About the rinsed-out blonde on my left. Then I said, "Hi", like a spider to a fly, remembering what my little girl said.

Lady Stiletto – Elliott Murphy - Ch baby you got such a way with words. You got such a way with your hairstyle. There's only one thing that you do I don't believe. That's when you smile.

The Man Who Sends Me Home – Laura Nyro - There's a man who loves me when it hurts inside. There's a man who loves me when my hair is tied, when my hair is down. When I touch the man, Lord, I rise to rooftops in his eyes.

Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton - It's late in the evening. She's wondering what clothes to wear. She'll put on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair. And then she asks me, do I look all right? And I say, yes, you look wonderful tonight. Blech!!

Unknown Legend – Neil Young - Somewhere on a desert highway she rides a Harley-Davidson. Her long blonde hair flyin' in the wind. She's been runnin' half her life. The chrome and steel she rides collidin' with the very air she breathes

Lady Godiva – Peter and Gordon - Seventeen, a beauty queen. She made a ride that caused a scene in the town. Her long blonde hair hangin' down around her knees. All the cats who dig striptease prayin' for a little breeze. Her long blonde hair falling down across her arms hiding all the lady's charms.

Hazel – Bob Dylan/The Band - Hazel, dirty-blonde hair. I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen with you anywhere. You got something I want plenty of. Ooh, a little touch of your love.

Too Much Monkey Business – Chuck Berry - Blonde hair, good-looking. Trying to get me hooked and married. Get a home, settle down by the book. Too much monkey business,
For me to be involved again.

Take It Back – Cream - Don't let them take me to where streams are red. I want to stay here and sleep in my own bed. Need all your loving, long blonde hair. Don't let them take me 'cause I'm easily scared. Take it back, take it back, take that thing right out of here. (about a draft notice, no?)

Pretty Ballerina – Left Banke - I had a date with a pretty ballerina. Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes. I asked her for this dance and then she obliged me. Was I surprised? Yeah. Was I surprised? No, not at all. .... Just close your eyes and she'll be there.

Sunlight – Youngbloods/Three Dog Night - Have you seen the sunlight pouring in through her hair? Felt her warm mouth on you in the summer's air? Running in a field of brown. Laughing, rolling, on the ground. Smiling as she pulls you down. That's the way she feels about you. That's the way she feels about you.

Wild Night - Van Morrison - As you brush your shoes, stand before the mirror and you comb your hair, grab your coat and hat - And you walk wet streets tryin' to remember all the wild night breezes in your mem'ry ever. And everything looks so complete when you're walkin' out on the street and the wind catches your feet sends you flyin', cryin'. Ooo-woo-wee. The wild night is calling.

Looking Elsewhere – Jim Lauderdale - Looking elsewhere. From the sky to the ground. From the sea to the sunset. From the hill to the town. From the creek to the bar room. From the dawn till the sun sinks over the mountain and another day is done. Elsewhere, that's where I was looking, when I should have been looking right over there. Over and over, right over there. Sweet apple blossoms twined in your hair.

Cinnamon Girl – Neil Young – I wanna live with a cinnamon girl. I could be happy the rest of my life with a cinnamon girl.

Sweet Hitchhiker - Creedence - Was ridin' alongside the highway rollin' up the country side. Thinkin' I'm the devil's heatwave. What you burn in your crazy mind? Saw a slight distraction standin' by the road. She was smilin' there. Yellow in her hair. Do you wanna? I was thinkin' would you care? Sweet hitchhiker we could make music at the Greasy King. Sweet Hitchhiker, Won't you ride on my fast machine?

Get On the Good Foot – James Brown - Said the long-hair hippies and the afro blacks they all get together across the tracks and they party. Ho! On the good foot. You know they dance on the good foot. Dance on the good foot.

My Boyfriend Got a Beatle Haircut – Donna Lynn –

The Boy with the Beatle Hair – The Swans

Hotel California - Eagles - On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air.

Ziggy Stardust – David Bowie - Ziggy really sang. Screwed-up eyes and screwed-down hairdo.

Renaissance Fair – The Byrds - Maids pass gracefully in laughter. Wine colored flowers in their hair. Last call from lands I've never been to. I think that maybe I'm dreaming.

Bob Seger – Turn the Page - Well you walk into a restaurant strung out from the road. And you feel the eyes upon you as you're shakin' off the cold. You pretend it doesn't bother you but you just want to explode. Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can. All the same old cliches. "Is that a woman or a man?" And you always seem outnumbered. You don't dare make a stand.

Brass Buttons – Gram Parsons - Brass buttons, green silks and silver shoes. Warm evenings, pale mornings, bottled blues. And the tiny golden pins that she wore up in her hair. Brass buttons, green silks and silver shoes.

Whisper - Jim Lauderdale - Maybe in our autumn days, when my hair has turned to gray, I will take you by the hand and pull you close to me. And then I’ll whisper, whisper I think I love you. Whisper, whisper. I think I love you too. I like to... Whisper

Touch of Grey – Grateful Dead - Oh, well, a touch of grey kind of suits you anyway. That was all I had to say, and It's alright.

"Rebel Rebel - Bowie - Hey babe, your hair's alright.

" ... gotta a few more and a story surrounding above tune and album it came from. ... "

Bowie’s Diamond Dogs was released a couple of months after The Rocky Horror Show premiered at the Roxy. The Los Angeles cast included Tim Curry, Bill Miller, Abigale Haness, Bruce Scott, Kim Milford and Meat Loaf. It was the talk of the town. Sandy and I had already seen it three times. We were fixing to see it a fourth. She had a crush on Rocky (Milford) and she wanted to get with him. I bet her a jar of whites that he was gay. Confident bitch that she was, Sandy said it didn’t matter, she could un-gay him. I cracked up and told her that she’d better bring the whole trick bag. She thought he was cute. He wasn’t my style – too fuckin’ short. Too Tiger Beatish. Good butt though.

Three months prior to Diamond Dogs, Sandy had put together a homemade Bowie compilation on our Akai deck. She titled it “The Best of Ricky and the Balloons.” She purchased an import copy of the Rebel, Rebel/Queen Bitch single at Tower Records on Sunset. At the time, it hadn’t been released in America yet. She was excited about putting it on a 90-minute Maxell UD and blasting it in her red TR6. She liked “Rebel, Rebel” so much she put it as the lead and closing track on both sides of the cassette. We’d rock out and sing along in the car. It had attitude galore. To us the lyrics were “You love bands when they play it hard. You want more and you want it forced.” Whether we misheard them, or not, that’s what I still hear. That line and “You’ve got your transmission and your live wire. You’ve got your cue line and a handful of ludes” were our favorites. A couple of months later, when the single came out in America, they added conga and percussion and totally fucked it up. Obviously, the song is gender bending. Bowie could just as easily be talking about a boy or girl. Sandy and I took it as being Bowie’s nod to his rabid teen-girl glam fans. By the end of 1975, Cherie Currie kinda put a face on our image of the song.

Before the Kiss a Redcap - Blue Oyster Cult - So grab your rose and ringside seat. We're back home at Conry's Bar. The blond girl with her tattoo, reds and wine, coke of course. Oh, my Suzy, my Suzy. Why did we ever start. It's morning now; you'd never know.
The gin, the gin glows in the dark, glows in the dark.
