Word has reached me that Beatles purists are upset with the new Giles Martin re-master of his dad's Live at the Hollywood Bowl album.
I dunno -- sounds pretty freaking great to my ears. And I'm going to see the documentary it derives from the minute it opens, I'll tell you that for free.

Sounds like it's been heavily processed but in my opinion for the better. It's like we're standing on the stage with the boys.
Captain Al
I really look forward to Opie Cunningham's film. The mix on the tune is really nice. I wonder why "purists" would object to it? They want the music drowned out by the screaming audience?
No, Billy, it's that all 3 Hollywood Bowl shows were recorded, and have been unofficially available for years, so it would take little to no effort for them to release all 3 in their complete form, as, say, a deluxe version of the standard album.
The 1965 first night is interesting because Paul's mike is out for the first 4 songs and so you just hear the band (I hope it was just the recording mike and not the concert mike 'cause that would mean no one could hear Paul for the first third of the show!). While that might not interest the casual fan, it's a cool novelty for the fanatics.
I enjoy this album and it sounds good, but it does seem like a missed opportunity.
It took this long to finally get released on cd. That's because it's famously terrible.
Anything Giles can do to salvage it is okay by me. I have the lp. George had a lot of trouble transferring the original 3 track tapes. The only machine they could find was prone to overheating. A vacuum cleaner as a blower was used.
Thanks for the explanation, Gummo.
Wow! How amazingly big and clear Paul's voice is. What a singer.
This is a document for future fans. I have no criticism. It is a great document of the way this band really sounded live, but the technology of the day could not support.
think you man
While no audiophile's wet dream this is important stuff we're doing...that is to say very cool.
