Bad Taste is Timeless (An Occasional Series)

And speaking as we were over the weekend about people in the rock-and-roll field who might qualify as major dicks, attentive reader M_Sharp alerted me to the existence and relevancy of this Ben Vaughn song and video, which had been previously unknown to me, and which advocates, in religious terms, that offing Mike Love could be a good idea.

Okay, I've gotta admit, yes, I've expressed similar sentiments on some occasions, and yes I laughed -- heartily and out loud -- while listening to the above. And I generally like Vaughn.

That said, when it was over, I felt kind of guilty for enjoying it. I mean, it actually struck me as a little too mean-spirited/wise-guy for words.

So -- your thoughts?

Asking for a friend. 😎

Not funny. I hate Mike Love as much as the next person but Ben's Prayer is about as subtle as a Trump political rally and nearly as mean. I guess I'm in a grumpy mood this morning as was Ben Vaughn when he wrote the song.

I'm with Captain Al on this one. ML may be annoying, but he is one fifth of a phenomenal vocal harmony group that may have been worse without him.

A much better skewering of a fellow musician is Richard Thompson's I Agree with Pat Metheny, though even this doesn't merit repeated listening. https://youtu.be/ucgZQGPZOpk

Yeah, It's nasty, especially for Ben. That might be why he never recorded it. Or maybe he didn't want to be attacked by Mike's septuagenarian granny fan base.

The harmonies lighten it up a little, though, and it goes down easier if you hear it in a club after a few beers, or watch the video, and see everyone laughing.

Bad taste indeed. Ever hear of a filter?
