Kevin Salem: a guitar hero who deserves to be way better known than he is.
That's Soma City, his great debut album, from 1994.
You can download a zip file of the stunning opening track "Lighthouse Keeper," which is as close to vintage Tom Verlaine or Richard Lloyd as anybody who wasn't a member of Television has ever come, right here.
Yes, it's free. (In case you haven't figured it out, I finally learned how to post zip files, so I'll probably be putting up random songs I really like from now on ad nauseum.)
And you're welcome.

Oh, yes, that's a great CD. He *does* deserve more attention.
A damn fine album!

Bless you, Vin Scelsa, for playing this on your radio program (and even having him play live, which sadly I missed). It almost makes up for the lame-ass singer-songwriter types you kept playing.
I even saw Salem touring this record at Maxwell's. It was kind of a sad thing - the opening act was someone who was popular among NYU hipsters at the time (Sammy, maybe?), and most of them left before Salem came on. He still played a blazing set, though.
Oh, and here's another song from the record.
Dunno whatever happened to him - used to play quite frequently in the City of Cod a decade or so past..

trivial notes: Kevin Salem, formerly of Dumptruck, was the lucky buyer of a lovely though banged up Fender Twin Reverb (prior owner was a guitarist from the great band Tot Rocket and the Twins) that I had to unload before moving west. I have always hoped he gave it a good home as I grieved to part with it. - AP
