My Back Pages

Okay, I wasn't going to do this for a while, but the photo below just resurfaced after a couple of decades so I thought I'd get all self-indulgent once more.

Sorry.

From 1983, then, please enjoy Greenwich Village's finest, the fabulous Floor Models, and their should-have-been hit single "You'll Come Around."

The song -- IMHO sublime in its Buddy Holly-ness -- is by the great Andy "Folk Rock" Pasternack [second from left] who's also playing the cool twelve-string stuff. It's sung by the irrepressible Gerry Devine, seen here [second from right] in a borrowed sport jacket. The guy on the left, whose name rhymes with Sleeve Nimels, is the bass player; drummer extraordinaire Glen "Bob" Allen is on the right.

I really hadn't seen the above shot in ages and on the one hand, in retrospect, I think we're kind of cute. On the other hand, of course, as an old friend from back then said when she eyed it over the weekend, "It kind of looks like Gerry and the Shnooks."

Incidentally, the picture was taken by the wonderful Irene Young, who at the time (late 70s/early 80s) was more or less the official photographer of the Bleecker Street revival.

God, I hope we paid her...

Reminds me of my courting days, late sets at the Other End bar after I'd parked the cab and Leyla'd chased the last folkie out of the Speak. I remember Gerry coming down off the stage in the middle of the a song to tell some tourist not to throw ice cubes any more, not missing a beat. My own piece of '80s nostalgia - very big right now among my students.

Funny, I don't hear Buddy Holly so much as 1970s country-rock -- Pure Prairie League especially.

(After reading that sentence, I imagine mr. simels sticking pins in a Gummo doll....)

Before I thought of Holly, Bobby Fuller popped into mind.

Probably because I just woke up.

The gallop rhythm on the chorus is very Buddy, I think.

At least that's what we were shooting for.

I think it's fairly safe to say that the Models were listening heavily to the first two Marshall Crenshaw albums around this time, Marshall, of course, also being heavily influenced by Buddy Holly. Well done, I say, wouldn't feel out of place on either of those two albums.

Saw your comment at Atrios's place. And I know we've had this discussion before back in the earlier days of Left Blogistan when I used to comment regularly myself.

Just wanted to agree. Beatles for Sale is (IMO) THE Beatles record.

I'm the rare Beatles detractor. From Sgt. Pepper on I only care sporadically. But Beatles for Sale has been in heavy rotation on my music machines since I was a youngster. It's very close to perfection.

Yep. And the stereo version is absolutely exquisite.
