It's Churchy LaFemme Week: Part Deux

From 1967, and from the compilation album pictured below...

...please if not enjoy at least tolerate Anna Karina -- iconic muse of Jean Luc Godard and just about the most existential French babe ever -- and her actual hit record "Roller Girl."

Sweet fucking Jeebus, but that's just awful. BTW. that dreck was written by Serge Gainsbourg, the 60s pop Frenchie responsible for the soft-porn classic (with then girlfriend Jane Birkin) "Je t'aime..."

Have a great weekend, everybody!

The Troggs on Drunken French Karaoke Night?

Could never understand why Serge Gainsbourg is held in such high esteem. Charlotte Gainsbourg? Somewhat. But Dad?

I hear "Farmer John".

Yeah, the verse is taken from Farmer John or Hang On Sloopy. The chorus is unforgivable: she can't pronounce English and it comes out slurry and harsh. Merde!
Nevertheless, I will look for this compilation. Cover girl France Gall had some wonderful singles. And Francois Hardy belongs in any pop pantheon.

The company (the excellent British reissue label, ACE) that put out this compilation actually has two other CD compilations on French 60s Girl Singers, plus one on Italian 60s Girl Singers. And who knows what the future holds?... :) :)

Guess I agree with all the opinions above. So what's not to like? How can you beat a beautiful, action-seeking model with little vocal ability, an inappropriate march-style beat laid on top of hackneyed garage riff, background vocalists who squeak, and, some fuzz guitar. When Anna revs up to the chorus with "Roll-roll-roll-roller girl," her growl isn't very convincing or feline. Like a gorgeous woman who has had too much to drink and is losing her appeal, it's perfectly lousy. But perfect, nonetheless.

I'd like to put this on a continuous loop while my baby jams that fuckin' jelly deep into my cocked-up brain. This is the soundtrack with which to ride the Devil's curve in figure eights, drooling and moaning your way to Augoeides at the speed of light.

Roll-Roll-Roll-Roller Girl.
