I Knew There Was a Reason I Liked This Guy

From 2011, please enjoy Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -- with special guest front man Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam -- and an absolutely gorgeous version of Petty's "The Waiting."

Words, as I am wont to say at times like these, fail me. Jeebus H. Christ on a piece of challah toast, but Vedder sings that brilliantly.

There seem to be quite a few Vedder haters out there, but I'm not one of them.

Yes. Vedder kills on this. I am not a huge fan, but I will say he seems talented, to have good taste in songwriting, and relatively likable as a human being.

'Cause he sings it like Petty and not Eddie Vedder.

Boy, I couldn't disagree more, remnant. I think he sings it just like himself.

Never cared much for Veddar, but this is nice.

And speaking of Eddie Vedder...I remember someone in Stereo Review writing that a singer sounded "like Robert Goulet moaning and groaning that his orange juice is warm." Was that you, Steve?

Watching and listening to so many videos after his death, I can only conclude that I've seriously underestimated Petty as a songwriter.

A fine vocal performance. The guy can interpret a song.

In that Vedder sings it with his own throat and tongue - yes, it sounds like himself. But I don't hear any interpretation. He follows what Petty did. And I agree it's good. I'm thankful he holds at bay the annoying vocal quirks that I happen to dislike in most of Vedder's stuff. But all that said, I like it.
