I've never really paid attention to those guys before, and the reason I bring them up now is because one of my youthful friends, who's also my Saturday afternoon bartender, was playing the album that song is from at work last weekend, and when the chorus came on it instantly reminded me of another song hit -- probably from the 80s -- that I could not and still can't readily remember the title of, or the band that did it.
Obviously, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize© will be awarded to the first reader who figures it out.

That's not the one I was thinking of, but now that you mention I hear the resemblance.
That said, I remain convinced it was some New Wave or synth-pop band.
Can't place it. I've always thought they have one of the worst band names ever (and I like Toad the Wet Sprocket's name!).
The fact that if you do it alphabetically it comes out as JEW troubles me.
"My Saturday afternoon bartender". A whole short story in that phrase. I can't place the song you are looking for. It is a very nice melody and harmony. Not that it would make you happy, but I am going to guess you are looking for a song from Sting's early solo albums.
Sounds very Tears For Fears-ish. And China Crisis-ish. But with fuller and more contemporary production.
By the way, Jimmy Eat World's 2001 single, The Middle, is one of the great power pop songs of all time. Not as good as The Green Pajamas' Kim The Waitress, but almost as good.
