Low Self-Esteem Theater

Ohmigod. From 1965, it's celebrity scion Gary Lewis and The Playboys with "Count Me In." Not a bad record, actually, especially those fancy piano fills by the then un-famous Leon Russell.

Nevertheless, I absolutely loathe Gary Lewis. Why? Well, back in the day, like many of my contemporaries, I dreamed of looking like a Beatle or a Rolling Stone. So which pop star did I actually resemble?

This putz.

God, I hate him.

Hee hee, good one anon! I bear a striking relationship to Meathead from All in the Family. Well, I did 10 years ago. So I gained weight and grew a beard. Now I look a lot like Rob Reiner.

God, I hate him.

I don't see the resemblance so much. To me, GL looks more like a cross between Harry Shearer and a young Arlen Specter.

You're dreamier than that, Steve.

Of course, what do I know? I look like a hybrid Woody Allen, Rick Moranis and Elvis Costello mash-up.

Oh, stop complaining! At least you look like a music-biz type, Steve.

Me? I look like the love child of Michael Moore and Karl Rove.

And btw, those fancy piano fills sound an awful lot like Steve Nieve's playing 25 years later.

I would have to think that even when unfamous, Leon Russell did all right for himself just by being in a band. And ladies can't resist a man who tickles the ivories, or so I'm told. Granted, Gary Lewis's groupies probably looked like his father in drag, but still, by '72, Russell was something of a full-fledged rock star. I bet the door of that camper attached to the Rolls on the cover of Carney said, "If this thang's a-rockin'/Don't come a-knockin'." And you can bet Leon made up for lost time.

One time on East 3rd Street some guy came in and started giving me shit because I was playing an Al Kooper album and Kooper is obviously beneath contempt because he once wrote a Gary Lewis hit, and I said, "Yeah, who do you like?" and he started rhapsodizing about Leon Russell and I fell on the floor laughing.

Also, I got pretty sick of people telling me I looked like Cher.

Avedon: Heh. That "All long-tressed, brunette females appear alike" meme.

I love it when music snobbery falls on its face.

steve simels: Is Gary Lewis still alive? I hadn't thought of him in many years.

For heaven's sake, people, start feeling better about yourselves. Who did I look like in the prime of my young life? Paul Goddamn Williams. And now that I'm over 50, whose face surprised me with a look of loathing when I look up from the sink? Dick Fucking Cheney.

Now you can all go tripping down your stairs into the happy day while bright, upbeat music mickeymouses your steps. I'll just stay in here, away from the light.
