Words Fail Me -- The Ultimate Edition

Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, live in Australia last week, covering The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." Beautifully shot and with great sound.

I'm having a very tough week, so I really don't have the energy to give this the exegesis it deserves.

But let's just say that, on reflection. this performance makes a lot more sense, both conceptually and just as music, than I would have believed before I watched it.

That kicks all sorts of ass.

Bruce has been doing some really far-out cover songs this tour. Do fans suggest them online, or is he just coming up with them out of his own demented head?

Bruce is an artist.

Hey -- years ago, Bruce covered Suicide's "Frankie Teardrop," for heavens sake.

The Bee Gees cover is obviously because he's on tour in Australia, but it's no less jaw-dropping for that. Earlier in the tour, he's been doing AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" for a similar reason.

My fantasy is that before this is over he's going to cover the Easybeats "Friday on My Mind" or "Good Times."

Seriously, at that point I can die happy.

When I first saw the clip a few days before this post, this popped into my head (first read of it via Dave Marsh's book "The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made"):

“Look at great huge Maurice Gibb, singing like Donald Duck on ‘Stayin’ Alive,’” Roger Daltrey of the Who carped in 1978, then instantly added, “And that’s a great song. Bruce Springsteen could sing that lyric.”
