ABOUT HENDRIX, FIRE, and TIMING

1/wikipedia tells us ""Fire" is a song written by Jimi Hendrix and recorded by the Jimi Hendrix Experience in early 1967. It has been described as "an exercise in soul, psychedelic rock, and polyrhythmic jazz-inspired drumming" by AllMusic critic Matthew Greenwald. The song was remixed in stereo for the American release of the album."

this song has a particular place in my own autobiographical memory as it was played by the band at a party for the youngsters - including college-age youth - you could have called us "army brats" and some did - at the officers' club at fort devens, ma in december 1967 - at which i met someone special

we had gone our separate ways by the end of the spring semester, but in the 21st century i was able to find some traces of her on the internet - living in massachusetts again, with a different name - it was her dad's obituary that let me track her down - when i knew her she expressed the thought that she would not live past thirty, but it practice it didn't happen that way - may she be well, happy, and at peace

2/you may not have been to a unitarian universalist church service, and may not be aware of the flaming chalice's use as a symbol

https://tinyurl.com/UUsymbol

if you squint a bit, it looks a little like a cross, but it actually isn't - the resemblance and the non-identity are both on purpose

other religious traditions also use fire in a reverent way, of course

3/it is with best wishes and warm regards to you, steve, our host, and the rest of those who congregate here, that i suggest that this cartoon chuckle is, in the context of current events, "too soon"

I always found it an amusing irony that the one guy in ZZ Top who didn't have the long bushy facial hair was actually named Frank Beard :-)
