In case you missed it, Bruce Springsteen -- a man who has changed my life in unfathomable ways -- turned 70 last Monday.
Upon hearing the news, a certain Shady Dame of my acquaintance remarked "And since he's a manic-depressive, I'm sure he's handling it really well."
Obviously, we're both going to hell for that joke.
In any case, Happy Birthday, boss.

As someone whose life was also changed by Bruce, I'd be curious to read how he changed yours.
Ask and ye shall receive.

I would have been fine if Bruce's music had stopped after the Darkness" album in 1978. Those first four are that magical for me.
And yet he's done some damn fine music since then also! Happy Birthday Bruce!!!
Captain Al
One helluvan account there, Steve. I had goosebumps about the "Route 66" thing and I wasn't even there.
Fourteen years old. Working class kid from a small Pennsylvania town. Listening to the radio in Dad's Chrysler Newport Custom when something comes on the likes of which I'd never heard. Turns out the song was called "Born to Run" by some guy with a Jewish-sounding name. It opened up my ears to things I'd never encountered before and I never looked back.
When he said in an interview in the late-70s that "rock and roll reached down into those homes where the only culture was television," I felt like he knew me. Which, apparently, is something a lot of people experience. Forgive me for gushing.
BAF -- I know the feeling.
